She was born April 2, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to an Italian immigrant father, Guido Alessandrini, and his American bride, Stella Barker Alessandrini.

Along with her younger brother, Alfred, she enjoyed a wonderful life on Calvin Ave., in Grand Rapids. Summers were spent at Lake Michigan whenever the family could get to the “beach.” The summers nurtured her love for sun, water and sand, but the long. snowy winters played a role in Jean’s decision to move to warmer climates.

She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her father was a well-known furniture designer with Baker Furniture Company, which influenced Jean's desire to become an interior designer. Upon graduation from the university, she joined the design staff of Baker Furniture in their Grand Rapids Showroom, where the worked with leading decorators and furniture buyers of that era. With offers to join Knapp & Tubbs in Los Angeles and Fowler Brothers in Chattanooga, the toss of a coin determined her decision, and in 1952 she became the head of the design staff for Calvin Fowler in Chattanooga.

She met and married Theo Evans Jr., head of Evans Lumber Company. They raised three children on Lookout Mountain and were married 44 years before his death in 1998.

Jean was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain, Woodland Garden Club, Tuesday Girls Bridge Club, Outlook Book Club, Lookout Mountain Investment Club, and had served on the board of the Florence Crittenton Home. For 13 years she was the volunteer co-manager of the Hunter Museum of American Art Shop and served on its volunteer board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theo Evans Jr.; and her daughter, Laura Jean Evans.

She is survived by her son, Theodore I. (Linda) Evans II of Crested Butte, Colo.; daughter, Sarah Evans of Santa Fe, N.M.; four grandsons, Samuel Glyn Evans and Theodore Isaac Evans IV, of Crested Butte, and Alexander Combs and Theo Combs of Gloucester, Mass.; brother, Alfred (Ann) Alessandrini of Grand Rapids; sister-in-law Peggy Evans Thomas of Chattanooga; brother-in-law, Charles W. Evans of Lakesite Tenn.; Peter and Francesca Combs of Gloucester, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean’s children and grandchildren will always remember how special she made the holidays and their birthdays feel. She was always there to impart positive advice for her children when they needed some guidance. Jean was known for her hospitality and her ability to reach out to others, engaging anyone in a conversation in a warm and caring manner. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, relatives and the many people who considered her a friend.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and will be announced in the obituary column at that time.
