Girls Track and Field

Player: LaQuisha Jackson

The Howard sophomore lived up to her pre-Fling hype by following through on her announced intentions of breaking state 100- and 200-meter records. Jackson also anchored the Lady Hustlin' Tigers' state titles in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and in two years has yet to lose a running event at the state meet. After setting a state record in the 100 (11.46), she capped her night in Murfreesboro by running the 200 in 23.86, breaking a 32-year-old state mark. She began the week by finishing third in the state pentathlon, the first season she has competed in that event. "I'm still in shock of what she accomplished," Howard coach Jennifer Mitchell said. "You just don't break sprint records by as much as she did. I'm like everybody else and really anxious to see what she can do in the next couple of years."

Coach: Bill McMahan

On the way to Baylor's third consecutive Division II girls' state championship, McMahan coached his 19th set of Lady Red Raiders to an undefeated regular season, which included winning the Optimist Championship, the Mid-South Championship and the D-II East Region title. At the state meet, Baylor won seven events and earned the title by 48 points. "We had a lot of girls who maxed out and ran as well or better than they have all season," McMahan said.
