Ask a Dietitian

Q: I have a craving for crunchy, salty things. Is there a good substitute for chips or Chex snack mix?

A: To satisfy a need for crunch and salt cravings, consider buying Soy Crisps instead of chips or soy nuts that are lightly salted. Another alternative is Baked Lay's potato crisps, which come in a variety of flavors such as barbecue and sour cream and onion. Popcorn without added butter or salt is a great choice to satisfy a craving and receive a healthy serving of whole grains. Look for 100-calorie packs of popcorn to help with portion control. Raw vegetables dipped in humus or low-fat dressing also can satisfy a crunch craving.
