A small earthquake that experts say would have sounded like a moderate explosion from far away was reported on the outskirts of Dalton Sunday afternoon.
At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, a 1.5 magnitude earthquake that was 7 miles deep was reported about five miles from Dalton, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
That size earthquake is insignificant and probably wouldn't be felt, said Oliver Boyd, a seismologist with the Geological Survey's Memphis Regional office.
The smallest earthquakes that can be felt are in the 2.5 to 3 magnitude range, he said.
Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said no one called to report feeling any kind of activity.
