JASPER, Tenn. -- Though Halloween falls on Sunday this year, the date will be celebrated on Saturday night throughout Marion County.

The city councils in Jasper, Kimball, and South Pittsburg, Tenn., each voted unanimously to move the celebration out of respect for Sunday night church services.

"I was approached by a minister wanting to move the observance of Halloween to Saturday night," South Pittsburg Mayor Mike Killian said. "My wife informed me that has been done in the past, but I don't really remember it. I certainly favor that, though."

Jasper Mayor Billy Simpson said the move is something all the towns in the county have done in the past.

Officials said Jasper also will have an 11 p.m. CDT curfew that night.

"Usually when Halloween comes on Sunday, all the communities celebrate on Saturday," Jasper Police Chief Tim Graham said. "In the past, we've always done it that way and had [a curfew]."

In Kimball, city administrators will hold a Trunk or Treat block party from 4 to 7 p.m. CDT on Oct. 30 at Kimball Park.

"A lot of the businesses will be involved," Kimball Mayor David Jackson said. "We want everybody in the area to bring their kids and grandchildren out."

Jackson said if anyone wants to bring a car to hand out treats, they'll need to contact the Kimball City Hall to reserve a spot inside the park.

"It's just a little something we do in an effort to keep the kids off the roads and keep them safe," he said.
