Bishop Eddie Long

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

i guess mr. bennett already has convicted him.

i guess, it's not whether it's true or not, it's the seriousness of the charge, huh?

let's string him up!

who needs the law!

after bill clinton...what's the big deal? i man in a position of power taking advantage of a subordin- ate/younger person? president, preacher..it should all be good....governors, teachers, bosses...bill clinton got to keep his job....

you libs lowered the bar..along with your allies in the media.

man of the cloth, president of the united states..both role models.

it's all the same to me.....

you may say it's worse because he's a man of the cloth, well, in a sense it is.........i guess he's be more of a hypocrite...but, it's only a matter of degree to me....taking advantage is taking advantage is taking advantage.

he may or may not be guilty..but one thing is for sure...you libs love to pounce on religious people who falter......as if it's an overall statement about the faith.

libs can't wait to prove christians are hypocrites.

but one of the most obvious examples of christians being hypocritical is the way so many of them voted for obama, ignoring his support for the most horrific form of abortion. that's hypocracy.

but that was lost on mr. bennett and other liberals. ..or should i say ignored...given that abortion is sacred to them.

Do you really think Clay made matters worse??

When one person makes an accusation, be it of a private or a public nature, that' one thing.

When four people make an accusation, with one standing in front of a reporter, on camera, stating that he "can still smell his cologne, and that there are not enough showers that can be taken to wash it off," That's a little harder to ignore.

It's even harder to ignore the four filed lawsuits posted online with complete details revealed in them.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/25213454/detail.html

http://www.wsbtv.com/download/2010/0924/25148991.pdf

And then, the icing on the cake are the cell phone pics that he allegedly sent to the young men, which are a little less than Pastoral in nature.

http://www.wsbtv.com/slideshow/news/25123946/detail.html

The fact of the matter is that only the four, now grown men, and Bishop Eddie Long, know what transpired between themselves. Given the amount of detail that is contained in those lawsuits, I am of the opinion that the Bishop has some 'splainin to do.

Francis, the man, if you cannot see a problem in a man of the cloth allegedly taking advantage of at least four boys who were all in their teens, as may be evidenced by your excusing it or comparing that to what Bill Clinton did with a consenting adult, who NEVER herself lodged any complaint about what happened, then you are hopeless. Ken Starr lodged that complaint, remember?

This issue has nothing at all to do with abortion. I cannot believe that you have the audacity to offer it in conjunction with any discussion on the subject of child molestation.

The trust between an adult and a child is equally sacred. A man of God, especially one who preached against homosexuality, should be held to an understandably higher standard, don't you think?

And lastly, this is not about a simple case of Christian hypocrisy. This is about a man who may well have taken sexual advantage of at least four men who were children at the time the acts occurred.

Blaming Clay for raising awareness to the case is a little like blaming the boys for being molested.

Is that going to be the subject of your next post?

alprova, you make a lot of good points, as usual.

I think Francis's concerns regarding presumed innocence are valid, too.

I think this is tough ground for a politcal/current events cartoonist.

In the U.S. we do have to presume innocence, from a legal standpoint and in the way court proceedings are held. (Of course we don't really do this completely, even in the court system. High bonds are set due to the nature of the crime and the convicted.)

On the flip side, there is nothing I am aware of that the general public must presume innocence. Though, though it's a nice concept. As is "love thy neighbor" and "turn the other cheek." Good concepts, but not always easy to overcome instinct.

I'm guilty of picking and choosing presumption of innocence. Francis himself does not presume Obama's innocence or good intentions. He's tried and convicted Obama in his own mind. I will confess, I have at times given Obama too much of a free pass on some issues which I would have been upset if Bush had done (topic for a later discussion.) So we all have our hot button issues and not one of us is totally consistent. I'm okay with that.

What is striking to me, regarding Bishop Long is that he has not denied the charges, even when he addressed them. He only said he was going to vigorously defend himself against them. He says his lawyers told him not to address the charges.

While lying and professing false innocence is certainly a common practice among people who are ultimately found guilty. In my experience, it's rare for people who do not deny the charges to actually be found innocent.

Frances, if you believe a mutual act between consenting adults and acts of pedophilia are "all the same" to you, you are one sick puppy...

If you want to make a case for presumtion of innocence, the Tonya Craft case would be a much more apt comparison than any thing you brought up. The prosecution here does seem to have a much better case so far.

Men of the cloth should be held to a higher moral standard, and it is Christians who should be pointing out the hypocrisy more than anyone. Is this an example of who you want preaching to you on how to behave?

On the other hand men of the cloth should be held to the exact same legal standard as any other human accused of the same deeds.

Francis always find fault with Clay, regardless of what he draws.

Today's cartoon convicts Bishop Long of nothing besides what has already been proven- that he poses for beefcake photos and then sends to young male parishioners. To summarize this sex scandal as being the centerfold in the New Birth Missionary Baptist Bible seems pretty mild to me.

Although the photos are not obscene, and prove nothing, they do demonstrate a creepy sense of propriety on Bishop's part.

Francis, I wonder if you would be so quick to jump to the Bishop's defense if the same photos were sent to your sixteen year old son?

I don't know where you get the idea that CNN has in any way attempted to "clear" Bishop Long. Due to the fact that the CNN studios is located in Atlanta, they have been all over the story, including being the media outlet that interviewed two of the men who filed suit against Long and the church.

That is not to say that CNN, like all cable stations, has not had several "cross-fire" segments, allowing defenders of the Bishop to make their case, but I think CNN has done a fine job of bringing the facts to light, and they are not in favor of Bishop Eddie Long.

I hope you're not going to pull out the "race card."

Clara, it may be that you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. You're also dealing with dial-up, if I remember correctly, so it would take forever to open some pages, even if you do have Acrobat Reader.

It might take awhile to download it, but you can download Reader at the following site. If you do not have Windows XP as your operating system, be sure to click the link "Different Language or Operating System?" and find yours.

http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Once it's downloaded, you can install it and then you should be able to open those links to .pdf files.

if someone is for abortion, then they can get away with anything else in a femist's mind. you liberals like to say.."get over it"...it's not matter of getting over it....it is old news...but it's the most high profile example of a man in power taking advantage of a subordinate and getting away with..by keeping his job.

Frances, you seem to forget that Clinton's escapades were well known even before he was elected - and he was still elected anyway. Remember Gennifer Flowers? The only folks that wanted him out of the job for the Monica affair was the conservatives who always hated him and never voted for him to begin with. And he still has high approval ratings today. The whole Ken Starr mess is yet another example of conservative wasteful spending.

Gennifer and Monica were not victims, they were more like goupies. They were adults who had full knowledge of what they were doing and were taking advantage of him just as much as he was of them.

There have been many presidents throughout history that have had affairs. I am not saying it is a good thing, but has no bearing on thier ability to lead. Many CEOs do the same thing and keep their jobs. Pedofelia is a criminal act, cheating on your wife is not. See the difference?

There is no relation to this issue here no matter how you want to twist it to your "everything is the libs fault" view.

Francis, THE MAN, wrote: "but bill clinton was more high profile......he got away with it. he kept his job and it all became a big joke. and bill clinton didn't do what he did for pleasure?"

What did he get away with? The only thing he was charged with was for lying under oath when he denied the affair. And for that, he ultimately lost his license to practice law.

The sex he had outside of marriage was with another consenting ADULT, contrary to popular belief, was not the business of the American people. It was the business between himself, Monica Lewinsky, and Hillary.

That didn't stop Conservatives from making a complete spectacle of themselves in front of a world, who laughed at the absurdity in trying to oust an elected President for doing what many men would do, given half the chance.

And, many of those who tried to oust him were just as guilty of being involved in illicit sexual escapades, and were outed for their utter hypocrisy.

Newt Gingrich comes to mind as one of the worst offenders in that respect. He voted for all 4 articles of impeachment. Mark Sanford, a Congressman at the time, voted in favor of 3.

Want more? Bob Livingston - all 4. Helen Chenowith - all 4. Dan Burton - all 4. Henry Hyde - all 4. Mark Foley - 2 of the 4. Vito Fossella - 3 of the 4. John Ensign - 2 of the 4.

"if you're ok with what bill clinton did...and him keeping his job, then you're a hypocrite for condeming others for abusing their postion of power and demanding that they be punished by at least losing their postion.... whether it's the presidency, the pulpit, a teacher in a classroom, or a ceo in a corporation....it's all abuse....abuse of power....to not see that means your intellectually dishonest at the least, or just dense. sorry.

You're still comparing what Bill Clinton did to what Eddie Long is accused of doing? You don't see any difference at all? You don't think that a man who may be guilty taking advantage of boys, who were then 13-15 years old, deserves to be punished for what he did? Wow.

Bill Clinton didn't abuse anyone. Monica Lewinsky was a willing victim, if not the seducer, and she was absolutely a consenting adult in all respects, nine times in fact. At no time did she EVER offer one word of complaint to what happened between herself and Bill Clinton.

I'm sorry to say this, but the more you type, the more suspect you become for even attempting to defend what may have happened between Bishop Eddie Long and those boys.

This is no longer about whether or not it happened at all. It's becoming rather quickly about your making invalid comparisons of acts between consenting adults, to that of an adult taking advantage of a child.

And that is not a joke, nor funny at all. You continue to type at your own peril.

Perhaps you are a Catholic. They are well known for turning a blind eye to men of the cloth taking advantage of their youth.
