Chattanooga police have said the suspect in the fatal shooting of one of their own on Saturday is Jesse Mathews, a parolee and fugitive from Colorado who is wanted there on robbery warrants.
Mathews is suspected in the fatal shooting of Sgt. James Timothy Chapin, a 26-year veteran, and wounding of Officer Lorin Johnston during a pursuit after an armed robbery at the U.S. Money Shops at 5952 Brainerd Road.
Police said the robber fired at officers and was wounded when they returned fire.
Police spokeswoman Jerri Weary said in a news release that Mathews is still hospitalized and no information available on his condition.
The investigation will be lengthy, Weary said.
Funeral services for Chapin will be announced later.
"This morning hearts are heavy at the Chattanooga Police Department over the loss of fellow officer,"Weary said.

A parolee. I suppose we can thank some politician like the ones who "commute" sentences that turn around and murder...thank you Mr. Mike Huckabee, or we can thank a prison system that's going broke because it gives prisoners the comforts of home and education & feeds them better than our elementary school kids.

The mans color has nothing to do with it. He is A POS. I hope we don't half to spend the money to put him on trial. Hell is ready for him. I can think of no better place.
@cowboy920 if the man's color had been that of a minority, and God Forbid if he'd been a minority from south of the border, one can only imagine the ship'em back to Mexico, Africa crowd who would have been committing on this story. The comments would have been in the hundreds, perhaps thousands by now, rather than only 4?!!
He looks like a skinhead or Aryan Brotherhood type. It would be interesting to learn more about the rest of the shooter's life story.
