  • Box cutter used by student during fight
A Hixson High School student used a box cutter during a fight after school Monday. One student was transported to Erlanger hospital, while the other was taken into custody by Chattanooga Police.

A Hixson High School freshman brought a box cutter to after-school athletic practice and allegedly used it to send another student to the hospital.

A junior, 17, whose name was not released, was taken to Erlanger hospital with a cut on his arm and the top of his head, said Officer Rebecca Royval, Chattanooga police spokeswoman. He was treated and released, she said.

The 16-year-old accused in the slashing was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault, Royval said.

One of the students was at the school for baseball practice and the other was playing soccer, but it was not clear which was the victim and which was the accused, said Danielle Clark, spokeswoman for Hamilton County Schools.

According to police, the two juveniles were in the school parking lot when they got into an argument that turned into a fight. As the fight ended, one juvenile walked away while the other went to his vehicle and got a box cutter, police said.

He came back and rushed the victim, cutting him superficially, police said.

The student faces disciplinary action from the school system once more details emerge, Clark said.

“Being at an extracurricular activity is just like being at school,” she said.

She said it’s the first such incident at Hixson High in three or four years.
