The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Michelle Fuzzard was named Southern Conference softball player of the week for the second time this season Monday, to go with her pitcher-of-the-week selection the first time the awards were bestowed.

Fuzzard batted .571 (8-for-14) with two home runs, four doubles, six runs scored and five batted in during the week. She was the third Lady Moc in a row to be SoCon player of the week. She also leads the Lady Mocs with 14 pitching wins, countering five losses.

Lee doubles up

Lee University swept the Southern States Athletic Conference honors as Nicole Rodriguez was voted player of the week and Brittany Balough was pitcher of the week.

Rodriguez was 9-for-16 in five games last week with a grand slam and another home run, seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Balough got four wins in four pitching appearances, including a victory as a starter and another in relief against Brenau. She gave up two unearned runs and struck out nine batters in her 13 2/3 innings.

The Lady Flames went 6-0 last week and got within two games of Shorter at the top of the SSAC East, but Shorter beat them 8-0 and 7-6 in eight innings Monday. Amanda Albertson was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader for the Lady Hawks (27-9, 13-1).

Kara Pollock was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in game one, when Libby Munson beat Balough with a three-hitter, and Albertson was 4-for-4 and Jessica Womble was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game two, when Kelsey Barnes was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Tabitha Farrow had a three-run pinch-hit homer for Lee (20-13, 11-7).

Bryan wins two

Bryan College's first-year softball team is only 6-30 but now is 4-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference after beating Bluefield 3-0 and 6-5 on Monday. Brooklyn Jenkins was 5-for-7 with two RBIs in the sweep.

Amber Love and Leighann Henry combined on a two-hitter in the first game, when Courtney Combs hit a two-run homer for the Lady Lions. They trailed by two runs with two outs in the seventh inning of game two when Combs began a winning rally with a single. Jenny Keener had a tying single and Jenkins doubled her home, giving Shanna Chappell the pitching win with nine strikeouts.

Bryan's scheduled doubleheader today at Virginia Intermont has been postponed because of the forecast of bad weather.

McKinley shines

Former Dalton and Calhoun high school standout Maddie McKinley hit a two-run home run, and she and GPS graduate Jessica Phillips were among the Memphis players with two hits in a 7-4 Conference USA win Sunday against Marshall.

The Tigers won both games that were played in the series. The scheduled third game had to be canceled. Memphis is 25-10, 8-6 in the C-USA, with Phillips, fellow GPS alumna Kamri Chester and McKinley in key roles.

Lady Cougars 7-7

Cleveland State is 7-7 in the TCCAA softball standings after losing 5-4 and 7-3 on Saturday at Columbia State.

Sara Goza hit a three-run homer in the final inning of the first game, but the rally died a run short, and Madison McKinney and Kelsey Baker hits gave the Lady Cougars (22-16 overall) an early 2-0 lead in game two, but only D Elswick got another RBI for them.
