Lady Lions in another 'pink out' at Central

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Pink is not one of Red Bank High School's school colors, but the softball team is getting good use out of its set of pink jerseys. Today the Lady Lions will be breaking them out for a second time this year when they travel to Central for a District 6-AA game raising awareness for breast cancer.

Profits from today's gate and concessions will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. The Lady Lions played at East Ridge last Tuesday with proceeds going to the same institution.

"Why not?" Red Bank coach Mandi Munn said. "It's going to a good cause, and we already had uniforms."

The jerseys date back to last season's "pink out" game at Central. Because the Lady Lions currently do not have a home field - they're among a few teams playing home games at Warner Park - they offered to be the travel team in the series again this year.

"With us playing at Warner Park, there's no way to really guarantee the whole gate," Munn said. "There's two entrances. We wouldn't be able to get the full benefit, so we decided to keep it at Central. That way we could do concessions, too. We don't have the concessions at Warner Park."

Red Bank teamed with East Ridge to sell 315 "Strike Out Cancer and Hit it Hard" T-Shirts, accounting for $1,100 in pregame sales to go with the money generated at the field. Central coach LeeAnne Shurette said she was impressed with last week's effort, spearheaded by East Ridge coach Sandy Mauser.

"We might all try to copy what she did next year," Shurette said. "We're just trying to get a good crowd out. I just think it's an important cause and think these kids need to be aware of it. The money we raise might help one of them one day."
