Collegedale tennis coach Joe Chung loves the challenge his team gets when they face McCallie.

He just hates the results.

The Blue Tornado cruised to a 9-0 victory at the John Strang Tennis Center Wednesday, spoiling Collegedale's undefeated record and improving their own mark to 3-2 on the season.

McCallie dropped only one game in each of the top two singles' matches, while pulling off straight-set shutout wins in singles' matches 3-5. The Blue Tornado's Luke Orthner had what could be perceived as the tightest match at No. 6 singles, and he won 6-2, 6-0.

"I think we presented a challenge for them that they hadn't faced all year," McCallie coach Eric Voges said. "because they hit the ball hard, but we were able to hit more shots back than they were accustomed to."

Chung agreed with Voges' assessment.

"I think this was a match that will teach our kids to be more instinctive," he said. "If we played another team like we played today, we'd win, but you can't give a good player opportunities.

"If you have a chance to put a shot away, you have to put it away."

The doubles' matches were a lot closer. At No. 1 doubles, Patrick O'Brien and Jordan Evans trailed 4-3 to Bobby Brouner and Scotty Webb, only to drop four of the final five games in an 8-4 loss.

Austin Lee and Evan Chung fell 9-7 to Turner Voges and Scott Shelton at No. 3 doubles.

"I think this match was good for us," Joe Chung said. "It gave us an opportunity to play against a quality opponent."
