Good Question

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The burden of proof is on the prosecution. If you can't prove where he was born, how can you say where he wasn't born?

"...prosecution"? Only the wingnuts want to keep chasing this delusion about maybe, what if, nonsense. Get a life and critisize Obama for poor leadership, or find a good replacement for 2012, but why waste energy yaaking about what the state of Hawaii accepts? That's like squawking about Bush stealing the Florida vote in 2000. It's over. Move on.

"sharp stick to their right eye"....you wish...it's just another piece of crap offering from a democrat party hack...nothing more. more of the same. nothing new. yeah..really brilliant.

obama keeps the issue going.....no one else. it's a legitimate question. he's also supposed to be brilliant scholar and a constitutional lawyer as well? but where's the proof? why hasn't anything he's written in college ....or his grades been released? you libs keep insisiting that he's briliant/ highly intelligent based on that he attended harvard..and columba, yet where's the proof. where's the proof that he's a great constituional lawyer? all i've seen from him is one attempt after another to weaken it and put it down. he even said in an interview on a chicago radio station that he thinks the constitution is too much about what the government can't do to us. that's brilliant? what does he think it was written for? he's an ***hole who doesn't believe in inalienable rights or freedom. he's a thug.

he's done nothing as president to show he's brillinat..nothing, and since he won't reveal his grades in college or anything he's written, then there's no proof he was brilliant there either. a lefty college student being praised and rewarded by lefty college professors is hardly and an achievement.

obama is guilty of poor leadership, of being incompetent, of being corrupt and of spitting on our constitution.......yes.....and he needs to prove he was born on american soil. why? becuase he's been a liar and a fraud so far...and he needs to prove those wrong who say he wasn't born in this country. he'd make them pretty bad, wouldn't he? by putting this issue to bed he's gain ground. but he doesn't. one has to wonder why.

Thank you, thank you, Birthers!!!! Your ridiculous, racially inspired, conspiracy theorist BS will guarantee the re-election of President Obama. Sane people understand that the Certificate of Live Birth, along with TWO announcements in local newspapers, prove beyond any doubt that President Obama was born in Hawaii. Only a mind driven away from reason and sanity could glom onto a crazy, mindblowingly absurd idea that despite the Certificate of Live Birth, and the assurances of a Republican Governor of Hawaii that the so-called Long Form Birth Certificate also concurs, that the President of the United States was, without evidence, born in another country. What on earth could drive a person to believe such utter crap? Racism, maybe? Tell me what else. Yeah, tell me!

Of course the real reason President Obama won't release a copy of the so-called Long Form Birth Certificate, other than that there is no requirement that he do so, and also other than that the Certificate of Live Birth that he has already released is good enough for a Passport, etc., is that he loves the fact that Birthers are making the Republicans look like batsh t crazy racist fools with their wild claims, helping to drive Independents and other sane people into the Democratic Fold. Again I say, thank you, Birthers. We need another 4 years of progress and reality.

Why hide the long form? I'm sure it shows Hawaii birth, but hwaii hide it? C'mon, this guy's the president. We want to know every detail. (We know he uses a Connecticut Social Security number.)

And in "the land of the free," Mr Bennett would like to lock up a guy with an offbeat theory? That's far more dangerous than the hardcore birthers' demand for more extensive documentation.

SeaMonkey's 2:22 am post has a nice list of more serious issues than the long form, to which huge deficits can be added. Senator Obama voted against raising the debt limit; President Obama would rather stop paying the Army during a war than stop paying Planned Parenthood. Any of this more cartoonable than birthism, Mr Bennett?

AN ODE TO A MONKEY NAMED "SEA"

There once was a monkey named "Sea", as vile of a critter there be;he would call people names, demean and defame, anyone who'd disagree with he.

The monkey sat on the 'far Right, was ready and willing to fight, with any poor soul, whose primary goal was to bring this great land to the "light."

The vile monkey's language was crude, all-in-all he was backward and rude; one might say he was 'rough', and he thought he was tough, but he just had a bad attitude.

And that bad monkey liked to pick on old Clay, took exception with all he would say; he just couldn't come to grips with our 'toonist's' daily quips and lost his mind, I'm sorry to say.

So, the moral of this story is clear, always hold to your values so dear; but remember my friends..opinions are just like rear-ends, we all got 'em and some 'air them out' right here.

So, on this beautiful Easter morn, let's pay homage to the one who wore thorns; let us show that old 'monk', be he patriot or punk, we forgive him and don't care where he was born.

God loves you..Woody

How could so many people question President Obama’s birthplace? The below was written by Ben Shapiro who is an attorney and writer, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center. Is it a question of where he was born or how the environment/influences he grew up surrounded with resulted in what seems like someone finally in place hell bent on destroying this country. Who really needs a straight jacket? Maybe those that don’t question what has been happening or how it happened to this country for decades. Of course, most didn’t see it coming, but reality is at our doorstep. The American people don’t like to be fooled. This country is looking pretty foolish right now! Many people are waking up and questioning how Obama got elected in the first place. What is his true self/intent rather than where he was born?

“The answer, of course, is that Americans are desperately seeking an answer to a simple question: why does President Obama appear to be so un-American? The term un-American here is not synonymous with anti-American (though Obama has been that on occasion); instead, it merely signifies that President Obama is unconcerned with typical American principles and traditions. He sees capitalism as selfish and evil, religion as dangerous and oppressive; he sees the Constitution as antiquated and entrepreneurialism as exploitative. He is the representative of the Fareed Zakaria ideology at work, celebrating the post-American world. When America elects a president like this, many Americans begin wondering how it happened. There are always two answers to such difficult questions: the first is optimistically externally-oriented, while the second is realistically reflexive. It is far easier to believe that the problem of un-Americanism lies outside our borders, that within we are unified. Hence the oddly persistent belief that politics stops at the water’s edge, that our politicians unify around foreign policy. But that belief has been obsolete since the 1960s; hence the persistent outrage when certain politicians (see Pelosi, Nancy) travel abroad and then criticize their fellow American officeholders (see Bush, George W.). We like to think that if we hang together, we will not hang separately. Thus the stubborn belief that President Obama is born outside the United States. If he was, the unspoken logic goes, we can understand where he picked up his un-American philosophy. He is not one of us – he is rather a member of the same global community that despises America and tolerates Islamism, that slams American consumerism and praises Chinese communism, that rips evangelical Christianity while ignoring Muslim-imposed clitorectomy. We need not worry about our domestic institutions, goes the line of thought – instead, we must focus on protecting ourselves from foreign infiltration.

April 24, 2011 at 8:28 a.m.
mymy said...

More realistically, however, President Obama is the culmination of a century of foreign infiltration already in place. The turning of America’s institutions of higher education took place decades ago; it is too little too late to focus on such infiltration now. Beginning in the early 20th century, America’s colleges and universities were infiltrated by German thought, then thought to be the most sophisticated in the world. That school of thought, a merger of Hegelian utopianism and Marxist classism, quickly infected America’s halls of power. Theodore Roosevelt, always trendy, bought into the new “progressivism” with alacrity, jettisoning the Constitution and capitalism in the process. Bringing this perverse ideology to American shores, Teddy announced, “We of to-day who stand for the Progressive movement here in the United States are not wedded to any particular kind of machinery, save solely as means to the end desired.” This was the philosophy of incipient dictatorship. It was brought to its near-term apex under a college professor, Woodrow Wilson, who thought that the Constitution itself needed to be stripped away. Even as Wilson and Roosevelt began implementing German philosophy in American government – with disastrous results including the decimation of growing American industries and a bizarre foreign policy focused on global institutions rather than American interests – Europeans abroad began to plan the next step of the American takeover. Members of the Frankfurt School, German philosophers who recognized that class conflict would not take place openly, traveled to the United States, where they proceeded to agitate for an even more extreme version of German Hegelian-Marxism.

April 24, 2011 at 8:30 a.m.
mymy said...

Frankfurt School philosophers believed that Marxism had failed to produce widespread transnational class uprisings because societies were already too ensconced in a culture of capitalism. Culture and society themselves had to be destroyed in order to make way for a new brand of equality. And the first step toward such a revolution was destruction of traditional logic, destruction of traditional mores, and destruction of America’s homegrown culture. Men like Herbert Marcuse led the charge here, telling members of President Obama’s generation to make love, not war, and to fight the powers that be. America was cruel, and only by indoctrinating Americans in a new way of thinking could that cruelty be fought. The philosophy of the Frankfurt School, making an alliance with trendy French post modernism, spread like wildfire through the academic world. Traditional history courses were torn down in favor of “queer” studies, black studies, Asian studies, women’s studies; language was deconstructed in order to remove its capitalistic foundations; traditional sexual mores were torn asunder in the name of “tolerance.” President Obama was the result. He grew up abroad, to be sure, but he spent most of his educational career right here in the United States, indoctrinated in the traditions of the progressives and the Frankfurt School. Ironically enough, the biggest problem for America arises if President Obama was born here – because if he was, the problem of un-Americanism is now internal rather than external. Perhaps that is why so many Americans wonder about the birth certificate – they hope against hope that President Obama is a symptom of a foreign ill rather than a domestic one. No matter whether Jerome Corsi comes up with evidence of Obama’s foreign birth, however – it is clear that the problem of Obama-esque un-Americanism is now endemic to American culture herself. We have an ideological problem in our midst, and no amount of digging in Kenya and Indonesia is going to solve a problem that now starts right here.”

Come to think of it I have never seen my son in law's birth certificate and here I've been trusting him with my daughter and grandchildren all this time. DANG - I had better check this out.

He grew up in the same town as my daughter, attended the same public (government mandated) school, but that doesn't prove anything, and that could all have been an elaborate scheme to get the community to trust him. Then there were four years he pretty much disappeared. He was supposedly in a college out west somewhere. He has a diploma from UC Berkley on his study wall but if he is working for some foreign government, they have people who could have easily produced such a document.

Maybe the birthers are on to something here. I've never seen my sister's birth certificate either; she has just always been around. Who is to say she is who she says she is? Maybe if I told the police about this they could follow up on it. they will probably find nothing but you never know, and I say you can't be too careful.

PARANOIA WILL DESTROY YA

The GOP (Goofy Old Partisans) have to attack Obama for something.

Under Bush, Republicans kept two wars off the books to make their deficit look not as catastrophic, we lost up to a million jobs per month, and now they claim to be the party of 'fiscal responsibility.'

Obama has had to deal with a lot of crap left over from Republican rule, adding private sector jobs every month for over a year while having republicans constantly bitch, moan, and complain about how well he's doing.

How does a sober adult with even average intelligence listen to republican blowhards spew their paranoid rhetoric without convulsing in rib tickling tear spilling belly busting laughter?

Separate Question: Easter is arguably the most sacred holiday in the Christian calendar. Anyone know why it's celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of Spring? Sounds like a pagan thing.

I was born on a Good Friday years and years ago and I've never had a birthday fall on Good Friday again. I've known a few other 'Good Friday Birthers (uh-oh...) and they all said the same thing.

Although I think mymy's post is an extreme exaggeration, there is an element of truth. American "exceptionalism" has been over for some time. Americans are perceived overseas (and in part fairly) as provincial, obese, ignorant of the rest of the world, wasteful and myopic. In a world that is increasingly a "global" community, we are seen as reactionary, spoiled and demanding. The academic world's attempt to educate Americans about the "rest" of their history (everything that is not white-male-Christian) and make us aware of other cultures, other religions, other forms of government has been met with scorn and resistance. The rest of the world wonders what happened to the generation that survived the great depression and went on to win WWII; they seem long gone, replaced by an overweight, energy hogging, on the one hand sexually repressed, on the other extremely promiscuous society bent on making the world in its image (and it's not a pleasant image to most outside the US). And this is not just white Americans. African nationals look at African-Americans this way too.

Our ignorance has consequences. Here's a recent example: We thought by getting rid of Saddam that the Iraqi people would establish a more democratic society. Saddam suppressed the tribal conflicts between various groups, brought together by the British to form an artificial "country"; the nature of Islam is one of tribal loyalties, not national identity-with the dictator gone these groups are now free to resume their centuries-old conflicts. Oops. And that is only one example. People in Latin America have seen human rights take a back seat to corporate profits and anti-communist goals for decades.

Maybe this is what happens to any great society when it finally has more money and power than sense.

MyMy is apparently an avid reader of the zionist drivel pumped out by David Horowitz and his "freedom" center. It's well worth checking them out so one knows just who the enemy is.

From a good summary by Paul de Rooij back in 2005:

Horowitz, a self-declared former Marxist, is now engaged in a variety of projects ranging from promoting an "academic bill of rights", writing books [3], a database on "leftists" and "jihadists", and the FrontPage "magazine" [4]. FrontPage (FP) is primarily a platform for extreme Zionists to smear leftists, to attack academics who may be critical of Israel or the current US imperial proclivities, and to hurl ritual abuse against "jihadists" in reality, a thinly-veiled racist attack on Muslims or Arab people. Denigrating and insulting labels are flung around in FP, and its writers often brand anyone near the left with such labels as "racist", "jihadist", "anti-semite", etc. The American progressive broadcaster Al Franken's photo appears with a "racist" label juxtaposed; Rachel Corrie, the 23-year-old ISM volunteer who was killed by the Israeli army, is portrayed as "matron martyr saint for the pro-terrorism Left, the Joan of Arc of Palestinian terrorism" FrontPage also loves to denigrate: Prof. Juan Cole, Prof. Ward Churchill, Prof. Noam Chomsky Simply put, civility and integrity are in short supply at FP.

A new Horowitz "project" is the DiscoverTheNetwork database that monitors "leftists"; it applies the same McCarthyite Campus-Watch formula to a wider group of activists. It draws on the "research" of the articles that have appeared in FP, Campus-Watch, and liberally insults and denigrates those it has chosen to track. There is no place in a democratic society for such corrosive databases like DiscoverTheNetwork these amount to databases of libel.

let me illustrate to you concreted-headed libs what i just posted about.

ok..now follow me, ok? let's take two "black americans" ....i call everyone an american who is a citizen ..but since you libs like to hyphenate, i'll humor you.

two black americans.....clarence thomas vs barack obama.

here's why i think more of thomas than i do of obama;

  1. thomas is a conservative, obama is a lefty
  2. thomas understands the purpose of the constitution , obama does not.
  3. thomas believes in inalienable rights and freedom, obama does not.
  4. thomas believes the constitution exists to limit government powers, obama believes it should be more about what the government can do to us.
  5. thomas has shown amazing character having survived poverty, discrimination and working hard to get to where he is, obama, sorry to say, grew up a pampered, spoiled, anti-american who has about as much connection with the black struggle in america as barney the dinosaur. he hates america, even though he's benefited from it. thomas would have many reasons to be bitter, but instead he stayed focused and rose above it to achieve.
  6. thomas would never sit in a church for 20 years and listen to the racist and ant-american rants of jeremiah wright, obama did and still denies is it. which is consistant for him.

there're are so many more differences between them i could type all day.

and if you notice, you lefty onion heads, race has nothing to do with it.

in fact...it's you lefties who are the racists...herman cain said a couple of weeks ago that the democrat party is afraid of real black man.....he's exactly right. obama is the lefties racist dream of the perfect candidate...a light skinned black man who has leftist views......

al sharpton and obama have basically the same views....and intellectually, they're pretty much even......but, sharpton would never be nominated, because obama, to the lefty higher ups in the democrat party, and the liberal media, ...is more marketable..

to sum it up...you lefties have nothing left except the race card when it comes to obama..nothng.

he can't hide from his record now..or cover up...like he has his college writings or his grades.. his resume is now full of black marks in office.....

i have no idea whether obama was born in this country or not, but the doubts that exist are perfectly justified given his track record of lying and covering up who he is...many americans still feel they don't really know who he is...that's the way he wants it.

BW48 said: Obama has had to deal with a lot of crap left over from Republican rule

Let's look at what has happened since Obama has taken office, or is this Bush fault also?

Real earnings have fallen for five straight months, and are down 1% since the end of last year.

The U.S. has added $6 trillion to its debt under Obama. Three years ago, the U.S. had $7.9 trillion in debt. Today, we have $14 trillion.

The U.S. dollar has fallen so much and foreign nations have so little confidence in our ability to run our fiscal affairs that former Third World nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China, are talking about replacing the U.S. dollar in foreign trade with the Chinese yuan.

Obama says the "recovery" began in June of 2009, but last year's data shows real private sector GDP was in fact still down 1.1% from its peak in 2007.

Consumer price inflation is growing at a 6.1% annual rate over the last three months, while producer prices are rising an even-faster 13%. According to John Williams of the Shadow Government Statistics website, if we measure consumer prices the way we did before 1992, inflation is now running at 10% a year.

According to USA Today, just 45.4% of Americans had jobs last year, the lowest since 1983. Among men, just 66.8% had work last year, the lowest ever.

Under Obama, spending has risen farther and faster than under any president in history. At current rates, government at all levels will take up more than half of all economic activity by 2050. Today, government spending is at a record 25% of GDP, while government regulation costs the U.S. economy $1.7 trillion a year.

Blah, blah, blah...

Read Mallard Fillmore and skip Doonesbury. If you think that a cartoon represents the whole paper, you are truly nuts. The TFP prints a conservative cartoon on the right side-new one every day (unlike Bennett, who takes a couple days off each week). The Free Press editors have a curious habit of adding a title to the cartoon, as if readers need an explanation about what it means. Not sure why...

Of course, if you paid for a subscription instead of coming to the free website to piss and moan, you'd know this.

Not in the on-line edition. I do not get the print version any more in protest of the general TFP bias that is epitomized by bennett on the on-line version. I will consider renewing my subscription to the print version when they start better representing Chattanooga.

clay bennett is a bum who is not worthy of the people of Chattanooga. He has a small but very vocal following, much of which is not from the Chattanooga area.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press is now only paying minimal lip service to the notion of balance. Notice that they do not credit their editorial writers. This, I have been told, is at least in part because they do not want you to see that much of the editorial writing is not local. I cannot say if that is true or not, but it is one reasonable explanation.

The TFP needs to get their act together, get rid of clay bennett, and start looking more like the citizens of Chattanooga.

No, I didn't vote for the man, but he has done no more wrong than any other person who has been foolish enough to think he might actually do the electorate some good by 'being there'. No, he hasn't done all that much good, but it hasn't been for the lack of trying.

Which is more than I can say for his detractors.

The print edition is wonderfully balanced. Editorials on both sides, both national and local. Local editors for the two sides are quite different, and I find the quality of writing for some (not all) of the Free Press side to be poor. Sowell, Thomas, Williams are frequently printed, as well as liberal columnists, including Pitts on Sundays. Barrett, as crazy as he sounds, has his accustomed spot. There is a new conservative cartoon every day.

"Notice that they do not credit their editorial writers. This, I have been told, is at least in part because they do not want you to see that much of the editorial writing is not local. I cannot say if that is true or not, but it is one reasonable explanation."

Donald Trump is riding the wave of birther unreasonableness. His popularity has risen in recent weeks when he jumped on the birther bandwagon.

Never mind that Mr. Trump has numerous bankruptcies in his business dealings. Lawsuits for poor business decisions and has been accused of misleading other business partners.

Birthers love him because he is beating up on the President.

Good grief! Once more, the facts (not that it ever makes a bit of difference to the tea-baggers)...

Chiyome Fukino was the top Hawaiian official in charge of state health records in 2008, when the issue of Obama’s birth first arose, she said she thought she had put the matter to rest.

"...the original so-called “long form” birth certificate — described by Hawaiian officials as a “record of live birth” — absolutely exists, located in a bound volume in a file cabinet on the first floor of the state Department of Health. Fukimo said she has personally inspected it — twice. The first time was in late October 2008..."

"She found the original birth record, properly numbered, half typed and half handwritten, and signed by the doctor who delivered Obama, located in the files. She then put out a public statement asserting to the document’s validity. She later put out another public statement in July 2009 — after reviewing the original birth record a second time."

"Joshua Wisch, a spokesman for the Hawaii attorney general’s office, noted that a public index of vital records, available for inspection in a bound volume at the Health Department’s Office of Health Status Monitoring, lists a male child named “Obama II, Barack Hussein” as having been born in the state."

“What he got, everybody got,” said Fukino. “He put out exactly what everybody gets when they ask for a birth certificate.”

"Wisch, the spokesman for the attorney general’s office, said state law does not in fact permit the release of “vital records,” including an original “record of live birth” — even to the individual whose birth it records."

“It’s a Department of Health record and it can’t be released to anybody,” he said. Nor do state laws have any provision that authorizes such records to be photocopied, Wisch said. If Obama wanted to personally visit the state health department, he would be permitted to inspect his birth record, Wisch said."

"But if he or anybody else wanted a copy of their birth records, they would be told to fill out the appropriate state form and receive back the same computer generated “certification of live birth” form that everybody else gets — which is exactly what Obama did four years ago."

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/hawaiian-official-again-confirms-obamas-birth-records-calls-birthers-ludicrous/

BTW, the governor of Hawaii also saw the document.

State Attorney General David Louie is on record telling Governor Abercrombie he can't disclose an individual's birth documentation without a person's consent, Abercrombie spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said.

So which is it, can it or can not be released without the person's consent?

April 24, 2011 at 3:41 p.m.
canarysong said...

Sorry, Rick1, I am failing to see the source of your confusion. What does the fact that the DISCLOSURE of a person's birth documentation requires their consent have to do with the state policy that prohibits the RELEASE or copying of the original document? Obama clearly gave his consent for disclosure when he announced his candidacy for president; he also provided the only documentation legally available to him. Please, try to keep up! Do you seriously imagine that the republican party would have allowed him to take office if things were not legit? Trump, Fox 'news', the republican party, and the big businesses bankrolling teabilly candidates are ROTF laughing at all of the people stupid enough to continue harping on this non-issue. It's a great distraction from the fact that they have no real solutions to the many problems that we are facing.

If you birthers have a problem with Hawaii's state law (and the other states like it), then perhaps you should focus on finding a way to change the law. Meanwhile the rest of us have more important things to worry about.

BigRidge - I didn't spend a lot of time with the TFP site map but the only Editorial Cartoonist listed therein is Clay Bennett. Evidently the TFP hired him because he shared the owners' obsessions with anything Liberal-Progressive.

Clay has, of course, run into the built-in Progressive limits on what the TFP allows to be drawn and the plethora of non-Progressive subjects that it has declared verboten.

All right-side-of-the-page cartoonists in the TFP are NOT on the TFP payroll but are syndicated. I cannot imagine the TFP actually keeping a Conservative cartoonist in its stable. The mere thought undoubtedly makes their teeth ache. I figure the TFP keeps them on to show their self-perceived "balance" in all things political. LOL. Yeah, right.

In closing and as I have said repeatedly on this forum, Clay is merely doing the bidding of his masters. That's precisely what they want him to do and exactly why they hired him; they were aware of his politics from day one.

rick1 and woody,

The response you may get here is "please don't confuse me with the facts". Your 11:59 post lays out the facts in excellent fashion.

lkeithlu,

I think the many in the GOP and many Democrats both know what should be done but neither has the wherewithal to do it.

Assuming we don't crash and burn before November of 2012 Trump may be the best weapon the DNC has in 2012 and if he teams up with Palen the DNC has a gift. Trump will carry the bigots and ner' die birthers plus some radical extremist. The rest will split between Huckabee and Romney. The dems will regain the house and retain the senate with Obama winning big. The country will become his paid prostitute. Some real "potential" changes to go along with all the hope:

o The dollar will be replaced as the worlds reserve currency by a basket of currencies of other countries.

o America becomes a no cash society. All transactions will be by electronic transfer or by personal bar code, possibly with an embedded chip. Or,

o New money will be issued and the dollar extremely devalued. Turn in 10 old dollars to get one of the new pretty colored ones.

o Food and fuel shortages will be common place.

o Price and wage controls will be tried and fail again.

o Most of the remaining major manufacturers will relocate to other countries. Some major service industries and banks will be owned by other countries with their head quarters moved as well.

o The extremely wealthy will continue their exodus but at a much faster rate. 700+ in 2009, 900+ in 2010 ???? 2011 and ???? 2012.

These may not happen but if a politician suspected they might they would never say it and create a panic and revolt of major proportions. There is one question none of them answer; Can we handle the 28 trillion in government debt within the next 4 years? What about the 51 trillion plus total of all debts and growing that Americans owe?

Nobody here hopes I am totally wrong more than I do. I can hear that nervous uncomfortable laugh but you may want to think about just how much 28 trillion dollars is and what happens if America defaults or is perceived as possibly defaulting on the debt. One down grade by S&P already, the 2nd one is coming, possibly by Moody's, the 3rd one will be the knock out blow and change the world as we know it.

--- There is no conflict; you misunderstand. Apparently a definition is needed....

DISCLOSE - 1) to make (secret, private, or new) information known; 2) to allow to be seen

RELEASE - regarding law... 1) to surrender; 2) to make over to another person or entity

To summarize: It is illegal to DISCLOSE an individual's birth certificate information without their consent, but Obama voluntarily DISCLOSED that information for his candidacy (as required by the constitution). Hawaii state law prohibits the RELEASE of the form itself, even to the documents 'owner'.

I believe “birther” Trump may also be dwelling on Obama’s birth delivery so he doesn’t have to answer any personal questions about his own con artist activities. From CNN’s In The Arena:

VIDEO CLIP TRUMP - Las Vegas, I'm doing a job with a wonderful partner that is going to be spectacular. It's totally sold out. It's 1283 units, totally sold out, a great location. It's a condominium. And it's been a really amazing success.

SPITZER: . . Now for the reality. According to sales data submitted by Trump's own accountants, only 903 units were actually sold in Trump Hotel Las Vegas, leaving almost 1/4 of the units unspoken for. . . So, Jeff, what do you make of this discrepancy? . . .

JEFFREY TOOBIN, CNN SENIOR LEGAL ANALYST: . . . it's not a legal problem. But if he becomes a serious candidate for president, that kind of misstatement as they say, of politicians could be a big problem.

SPITZER: Here's what I would say, if this was one in isolation, OK. But if it is emblematic of a course of conduct, a pattern of - in practice, then it becomes a problem and that's why - let's take a look at another example.

Let's go back to the "LARRY KING" interview . . .

VIDEO CLIP TRUMP: . . I'm doing something that I'm very excited about. It's Trump International. It's a golf course along the ocean and palace where it's 2 1/2 miles along the ocean. And it's just opened and it's getting reviews that it's a better golf course than even the Great Pebble Beach . . . But I have 2 1/2 miles on the ocean which is more than any other course. Every hole either is on the ocean or faces the ocean, and it's great. And in addition to that, I'm building 75 great mansions over the top of the golf course. So it's a very exciting project. (END OF VIDEO CLIP)

SPITZER: Earlier today, we called the sales office at the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles. How many of those 75 mansions have been built? Five years later, six. And no more are under construction. And how many have been sold? Three.

But here's the thing, in 2003, Trump valued the property at $30 million. In 2005, he valued it at $360 million. Why? Because of the 75 mansions, but only six of them are there.

So that discrepancy in valuation, Jeff, that's a big number, and arguably a big problem.

I suspect some of these “birthers” may be thinking under the influence of something, Canarysong. One of the senior editors at the The Atlantic, Joshua Green, says it took his friend who lives in the D.C. area only one day to follow the paper trail of Obama’s birth. . . And how long have the “birthers” been working on this? . . . one year? . . . two years? Talk about slow. Clearly, there are no movers and shakers among the “birthers." Anyway, I found Joshua Green’s article sort of humorous and thought I would pass it on to you:

One of the most often-overheard refrains from the Republican Party and its far-right base is that President Obama is the worst president in American history. Others say he "pals around with terrorists." They say he's destroying America. They say that he's weak, that he dithers and that he's effete -- implying either that he's gay or effeminate or both. Around half of all Republicans have told pollsters that he's not even constitutionally eligible to be president, which ought to mandate an immediate removal from office.

But what does all of this say about the men and women who are noticeably hesitant to officially announce their candidacies for the Republican nomination? Not a single one of the well-known frontrunners has declared anything more than "exploratory committees" -- quite literally the presidential campaign equivalent of dithering. There are several reasons why the Republicans are dithering.

First, Republican voters are more convinced about the wacky birth certificate thing than they are about their preference for a nominee,56 percent of Republicans would rather see "none of the above" than any of the current roster of would-be nominees. Simply put, Birtherism is more popular than the candidates themselves. The Republican legislative record is ridiculous. Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and John Boehner have introduced ideologically far-right, inconsequential and symbolic bills that kill Planned Parenthood and NPR. They've passed legislation that cuts spending for pregnant women. They've passed legislation that magically circumvents the constitutional lawmaking process. They refuse to raise taxes on the rich while trying to gut Medicaid and kill Medicare, even though supermajorities of Americans support both of these crucial healthcare programs -- including majority support from tea party Republicans.

At this late juncture, I don't see how the Republicans will be able to compete with the Obama machine when it comes to money, even with the awful Citizen's United decision and its subsequent deluge of corporate cash into the Republican Party.

The modern Republican Party fancies itself the party of quick, decisive action. Shoot first and let God sort out the rest. You're either with us or you're with the terrorists. It's the party of swift military action. It's the party that's spending $500,000 in congressional money to fight gay people. It's the party of apoplectic, doomsday talk radio screamers. It's the party that mocks "femi-nazis" -- the party that refuses to "bend over" for the "little black man-child." This is what they say, and it's a whole lot of blustery, impotent noise.

There's one last reason why the Republicans are so cautious about declaring their intentions. They're cowards. And they're self-debunking the mythology that modern Republicans are bold, brave "Reagan-ish" leaders. They're cowards and so they're moving at granny-speed rather than light-speed to run against the president -- a real leader onto whom they're projecting their dithering and indecisiveness.

Not that I'm complaining. (H.T;B. Cesca)

What do Trump and Obama have in common? They are both self made men that love the person that made them what they are.

What a role model Trump would make, admiring men would all have a coon skin hair style. He may want to check with John Edwards and get the name of the place he got the $400 hair cut during his campaign, you know the one where he was saying helping the poor was his life's work.

Obama to Admin assistant; "which way did they poll, I am the leader I have to know" and "how did it play in Peoria"?

If you want to know if Trump is rich and smart all you have to do is ask him, then again you may not have to ask, he will tell you anyway.

Check out some foreign newspapers. Americans will appreciate and relate to those targeted by the late night comedians. It may make you angry the way the U.S. is being laughed at because of our leader and our possible candidates. Being the butt of satire and jokes doesn't feel good.

Trump is going to keep talking about Obama's birth place, so he says, until he knows the truth and he is going to "straighten China out". It will be interesting to hear how he is going to take a country $20 trillion in debt up against a country with over 300 billion in a sovereign investment fund with major holdings in U.S. companies and real estate and even more in their general treasury and "straighten them out".

Trump may want to quit clamoring about Obama's birth place and learn a few things from him. Trump uses OPM (other peoples money) in his real estate ventures just as the government uses OPM in all their programs so he may pick up some pointers from Obama about how to do use OPM better.

chet, there's no hate involved in my comments regarding obama....i point out exactly what he is and why i don't like what he's done...i'm blunt because he's the in-your-face president...he wants the constitution to be more about what the government can do to us, rather than what it can't do to us. he's an authoritarian who has little patience for free speech unless it's in his favor....and i also believe the quote from nancy pelosi, "elections shouldn't matter so much" could easily have been uttered by him. he does not believe in inalienable rights...which puts him in the company of chavez, castro, and any number of other thug throughout history.

in fact leftists, like obama, have no problem suspending freedoms if those freedoms get in the way of their agenda. i hate what obama stands for, what he's trying to do and the dishonest path he's taken to get to where he is. i have no respect for him as a president or for his view.

cashingrealitychecks...

obama completely turned his back on the citizens of arizona who have been under assault by illegal alien criminals. the state took the initiative to come up with a law to deal with it because dumb ass liberals, like obama, will do nothing because they want the "hispanic vote"...he made sure the liberal judge out there ruled against the law. he sent his people there to apply pressure.

they're not supposed to be there..let alone committing crimes. why should illegal aliens not have to identify who they are? citizens have to do it all the time. obama's creepy disrespect for what it means to be a citizen is best summed up in a speech he gave last week, i think...he said something like,....whether we got here on a slave ship, through ellis island or crossing the rio grande, we're all the same. bull****....slaves were brought over against their will and their experience and suffering is unique and can't be compared, those who came over through ellis island came over legally/the right way.....illegal aliens are criminals....and don't belong here. they are not citizens and shouldn't be given the same respect as citizens..because they are illegal entrants..period...this is clearly an attempt by the radical obama to pander to the hipanic community....as all libs do.

criminals crossing over the border and killing us citzens and damaging property.....do your job obama.....what a creepy anti-american..

and seasmokie59er....obama claims he was born on american soil, it's up to him to prove it.

who knows where he was born. just because no one can come up with a birth certifcate to prove he was born in another country doesn't mean this isn't a legitimate issue.

You tortured birthers. consumed with the fairytale that Obama was not born in the United States, and is therefore, not eligible to hold the highest office in the land. Despite assurances from state officials in Hawaii, despite newspaper notices of Obama’s birth in Honolulu, despite the fact Obama has traveled on a U.S. passport for many years, despite pleas by reputable conservatives — and even less-reputable ones, such as Ann Coulter, for crying out loud — to just let the issue go, but the Birthers won’t. They demand that the president come up with further proof of his place of birth. When the White House declines to engage in such a ridiculous discussion, the Birthers read that as clear proof Obama has something to hide.

Obama is not hiding anything, he simply has far better things to do with his time than to offer additional evidence to people inclined to disbelieve anything he says. It is not his job to cater to idiots that have such a slim grip on reality. The problem is that there seems to be so many of you. About half of Republicans and half the people living in the South either do not think Obama is an American or are not sure. I hope you are just being intellectually lazy with your answers to pollsters. But all anyone needs to do is read some of the online discussions on this topic (here for instance) to realize there is a dedicated minority of people who cannot conceive of this son of a Kenyan rising to power in America without the aid of dark forces intent on destroying our way of life.

The Birthers have strung together fragments of loopy logic and complete fabrications to form fragile conspiracy theories that cannot stand up to hard facts or rational thinking. Yet, they persevere. The community of like-minded paranoiacs on the Internet helps sustain them. And what’s worse, they are goaded on by talk radio bloviators, FOX News commentators and even a number of GOP Congressmen who play along with this delusion in order to keep the voters frightened.

What is disturbing is that this fringe is getting disturbingly close to the center of conservative power, and debates between rational citizens of competing beliefs are being drowned out by the shrieks of the easily frightened, chickenhawks and tin foil hat brigades.

The only thing that will satisfy you is a ‘way back machine’ - so you can witness his birth.

The issue of human nature is also in debate. I believe it is human nature to want the advancement of the entire race. If I were to believe in capitalism as the be-all, end-all then that view would be unrealistic as capitalism is more about how many ppl you can step on to get ahead.

I agree overspending is a problem. I'm not saying Obama has not made some crappy decisions (which he has) but I also remember the plate he was given when he came to office. He should not have made so many promises based on timelines that were impossible to keep. But the GOP stops his attempts at resolution at nearly every turn. That is the difference between democrats and republicans. Republicans defy anything Democrats propose for the sake of their rich lobbyists and constituents - no matter how better the outcome for all of us.

I voted for Obama, and I am disappointed that he has not been able to do more, though I lay a lot of the blame at the feet of the GOP, who made it clear at the beginning that their priority was not bringing the country out of recession but bringing Obama down. I was appalled that the GOP, who spouts "values" talk, would choose politics over the economic health of the nation and of the state of TN. Even now, what little they have put forth has been more to advance conservative social issues than to move the economy forward. Disappointing to say the least, and I am glad I did not vote for them.

The problem with the GOP is that they cannot offer sound plans nor sound candidates as long as they MUST suck up to big business and the religious right nutcases.

Excellent post, Limric. But I don’t believe the “birthers” are seeking the truth.

Some “birthers” are clinging to this meanspirited “lie” because their hatred of this black/white Presidient runs deep, and they desperately want it to be true.

Some “birthers” know the “lie” is not true, but promote it because they agree with the Marxist Lenin who said: “A lie told often enough becomes the truth.”

And some “birthers” are just proned to be victims of conspiracy theories because they lack the skills needed to sort out the truth, which is easy to determine.

Yep I know how you feel. That's exactly the way I felt on 9/11 when Bush declared he was going to get the ones responsible for the attacks on 9/11 and make them pay for what they had done. I thought at the time as much as I didn't like the man, I was willing to support him all the way and so was 95% of the country. Of course we all know how that turned out. But lets recap anyway: Instead of getting the ones responsible for 9/11, he and his minions went after Saddam Hussein. The one person who had absolutely jack to do with 9/11. NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH. And what did we get as a result of Bush's adventure in heroism? Two wars which were unpaid for, Over 4000 Dead U.S. soldiers, Hundreds more maimed for life, Thousands upon thousands of dead Iraqi Civilians, Osama Bin Laden still on the loose(even today) and a country on the brink of another Great Depression because while he was playing the big hero cat in the Middle East, the mice of Wall Street were destroying this country and getting richer by the minute for their efforts. As for the rest of the country: hard-working people were kicked out of their jobs, beat out of their pensions and lost their homes. As for all this birther nonsense, keep it up, why not? It's all they've got. They're not going to prove anything. They won't be able to keep Barack Hussein Obama from putting his hand on the bible on Jan. 21, 2012 and being sworn in for a second term as President. Not only will they lose the White House, but this birther nonsense is going to cost them seats in the U.S. Senate and House of Reps just as someone posted earlier. Just keep it up or as Hero Bush once said: "Bring it on."

whaaa..whaaa...poor baby..poor obama...he started out with debt.....so he piles on to solve it? ...and threatens the private sector and businesses in as well? what literal dumb ass..

this is what happens when wacko lib dems/enviro nuts have their way....if we were energy independent, meaning we drill for our own oil, on our land and off of our shores... we wouldn't be where we are now.........

this is the way it is...obama will be blamed for the high gas prices, for high unemployment, for high food costs, for higher taxes and fees, for the massive underemployment and the high unemployment for the young(25%)....everything is worse since he came into office..everything..

do you people know how much information obama will not make public? mr. transparancy , in addition to not showing his birth certificate, he will not make public his high school records, his occidental college records, columbia university records, his columbia thesis, harvard law school records, his law review articles, articles from the university of chicago, passport, medical records, files from his time as an illinois state senator, illinois bar association records, babtism records and adoption records...in addition to lying about his association with domestic terrorists and criminals and denying he never heard the rev. wright spew anti-semetic and anti-american garbage...

he even recieved an "transparancy award" a few weeks ago..from some lib organization, probably.. and he recieved it in secret....

yeah, but birthers are crazy, huh...yeah....it's silly to think he'd cover something up, isn't it?

you libs actually think that by hammering "birthers" it'll help obam win...madness..

obama didn't inherit a trillion dollar hole, cashinrealitychecks...it was 600 billion something and the bush went along with tarp, which obama supported.

nobody feels sorry for obama, you libs..nobody..he ran as a moderate and seemed reasonable, then ran like a jackasss to the left when he got into office....being boastful and yapping about how "we won"..and being visiblily irritated when he realized he was elected president and not dictator and had to deal with that pesky 1st ammendment.......then he got his ass kicked on nov. 2nd 2010..then he moves to the center...

The entire birther argument is silly.

Obama's mother was a citizen, and that, by nature of his birth, makes him a citizen (i.e. a natural born citizen), and eligible to hold the office. Even if he were born on Venus, as the child of a U.S. citizen, he would be a natural born citizen, and eligible to be president.

If this is not the case, then John McCain is not eligible to be president, as he was born in Panama, while his father was serving in the Navy, in the Canal Zone.

The birthers may be numerous, but they nevertheless represent the fringe of the fringe. Remember when the fringe consisted of only a handful of wackos? (I suspect that someone is spiking the MountainDew!) Any doubt about how far out they are is quickly dispelled by the fact that even many on the far right reject their outrageous claims.

The Right Wing Melts Down As Glenn Beck Goes After Donald Trump

"Beck and company attacked Trump’s birtherism, “His whole campaign is based on the whole birther nonsense. Pat then brought up the AP story that noted that no Trump investigators have been seen in Hawaii, “Apparently, the short is all that Hawaii ever releases for anyone…including the President. They then kept hammering at Trump’s birtherism, “For him to release his own birth certificate, you would have to be advocating for him to be above the law. You cannot. They can’t release it. Even to the president. He can examine it himself there. Would you believe him if he examined it and said it looked real? Would ya? I’d love to see that.”

"This has been building for a few weeks since Glenn Beck went on Bill O’Reilly and took his first shots at Donald Trump, but now the gloves are off, and it looks like Beck is going to not allow his Tea Partiers to be taken in by Trump."

"Last week Karl Rove went after Trump for his birtherism, and we have even had dueling Fox News contributors fighting over Trump. It is clear that once Trump demonstrated some sustained standing in the polls, it looks like some on the right have mobilized a stop Trump movement."

mtnlaurel,

You referenced Lenin in his something like lie enough and it becomes not a lie. If you take the time to read or listen to his speeches you will recognize the rhetoric we hear from both parties.

If Trump is qualified to be president most of those posting here could be the next pope. he is in for a rude awakening unless the press thinks he should be the president. If they do may the good lord help us.

Where Obama was born or if hatched or found under a rock is immaterial in the scheme of things. He just happens to be president now continuing the agenda of several in the recent past. I don't think Obama, the Bush's, Clinton, Carter, Johnson or Nixon, I assume all born in the U.S., had the thought I am going to make this a socialist country. But, Socialism by any other name is still socialism and we have it in spades. The birthers, the tea baggers and the rest of the gang might as well face reality. We will have it and progressively become more of a socialist country whether some want it or not. They insist we are not because we are not exactly like some that are. They call what we are doing by various names. We are not unlike all the dynasty's in history that just knew they were different and so powerful they couldn't collapse and be replaced. The 3rd & 4th generation since 1776 is here, that is how long it takes for a dynasty to become so big and involved through out the world it is unmanageable and leaders assume more and more control of the masses thinking that is the answer. They have to in order to help and protect us you know.

Some will scoff at this and laugh but their children and grand children may not. Call it what you want but the things both parties are doing dictates what people must do and assumes more and more control over peoples daily lives. It is not something that is announced and a new name given our government process. We will keep calling it a republic and some already forget that and just call us a democracy.

harp3339,

Well written - your 7:52 post. You’re on the track to historical accuracy. Something woefully (if not completely) missing in most posting in this and all responses to Clay’s cartoons.

Out of the advances made, and progress, more so than any nation before us, our rise to world leadership, Republicans have learned nothing. Whenever confronted by the great record of our country and the promise of its future, all they can do is croak ‘Socialism.’

A Republican senator, Margaret Chase Smith once said, “Republicans might be determined to end Democratic control of government. But she continues: “Yet to displace it with a Republican regime embracing a philosophy that lacks political integrity or intellectual honesty would prove equally disastrous to this nation. The nation sorely needs a Republican victory. But I don’t want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny—Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry, and Smear.” This is what they have wrought.

America has always suffered fools who would have us dwindle the debate down to a range of opinions narrow enough to contain the edicts of a potentate, a priest or a plantation boss. But real of America tells us that the unique thing about our present situation is that we have suffered the fools so thoroughly that a good many —not just Tea Partiers or Dittoheads but citizens of the great middle—actually take people like Sarah Palin or Sean Hannity seriously when they rant that socialism, in the form of building codes, health care or shared sacrifice is anti Americanism

Barack Obama was, like it or not, born in the good ole USA, and NOTHING he has done… and no one has ANY evidence other than hearsay, that shows he is a 'socialist'. But we would be well served by a similar borrowing from the people who once imagined workers rights, rural electrification, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the War on Poverty. Socialism built this country. Those espousing the new ‘conservative values’ have in every sense, values antithetical to history….and the future.

Speaking of the Defense of Marriage Act, here is the four step preventative program currently going around the internet:

First: Let any man who wants to marry another man, marry another man.

Second: Let any woman who wants to marry another woman, marry another woman.

Third: Let any woman who wants to abort her baby, abort her baby.

Fourth: In three generations there will be no Democrats.

limric said and no one has ANY evidence other than hearsay, that shows he is a 'socialist'.

Obama wrote in Dreams From My Fater, "I chose my friends carefully, "The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets."

Obama cited literary influences including radical anti-imperialists Frantz Fanon and Malcolm X, communists like Langston Hughes and Richard Wright, and tyrant-lovers like W.E.B. DuBois. "Joseph Stalin was a great man," DuBois wrote upon Stalin's death in 1953. "Few other men of the 20th century approach his stature."

In Dreams, Obama cites Wright, Fanon, Hughes, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin.

Also take a look at Obama's mentors which include Ayers, Wright, Frank Marshall Davis who was an admitted Communist, the fraudulent Palestinian wannabe Edward Said, and the radical former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi. In 2003, Obama thanked Khalidi at a going away party whenKhalidi was leaving the University of Chicago for Columbia for providing "consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases."

Obama has told us he is a socialist.

Just relax, guys. Obama will be gone in 6 years and you can move your crazy theories and false esoteric knowledge on to the next person who disagrees with you. You'll never admit having believed all this birther crap, and if you manage to get a republican elected in the future you will call for bipartisanship and be shocked at anyone who does what you're doing now. It's so uplifting to know that I am not a racist. It just feels Christian. Clean and righteous. I just can't picture Jesus as a bitter, jeaous loser. Got Life?

rick1,

Have you even read Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright? They are arguably the most highly regarded figures in Black American literature. Reading and finding inspiration in a variety of good literature does not make one a socialist, capitalist, nihilist, existentialist, tiddlywinkologist, or anything else. I recommend you pick up a copy of 'Native Son' by James Baldwin and 'Invisible Man' by Richard Wright. They are very good reads and I think that you would gain some perspective and understanding from them. I promise they won't corrupt your conservative soul :-)

If they found out that he wasn't born in America (which he doesn't have to be if one of his parents had...prior to his birth...lived in the United States for at least five years), what would they do? Fire him? Ostracize him? Rip off his buttons and kick him out of D.C.? What? What would change?

Would the economy mysteriously become prosperous? Would there be health care for all? Would The gas prices drop to $1.99? Would everyone have a job? Would John Boehner's face turn white?

I want to know. If it causing such a big stink then I want to know how it will change our lives...one way or another.

Believe you’ve taken this quote a bit out of context, Rick1. Have you not? But, perhaps, this was your intent. As I recall, the sentence you quote is incomplete and starts off differently: “To avoid being mistaken for a sellout, I chose my friends carefully.”

I also recall the sentence you quote appears in a paragraph and section of the book discussing his youth and college days along with his feelings of insecurity and the confusion that he felt at the time over his race and ethnic heritage, which is quite different from what you suggest.

P.S. - What was going on inside your mind during your college days, Rick1? Did you have the same “hatred in the belly” or “conspiracy in the belly” that you do now? And have you written a book about the dreams from your father?

For one thing it would force those dwelling on it to find another unimportant issue to rally around to distract people from what is going on in government.

Do you think it possible those keeping the birth question in the issues arena are actually supporters of Obama and his agenda? It keeps a lot of facts about our national crisis out of the forums. Obama certainly isn't going to do anything to cut down on the media and blogger time devoted to the subject, it works to his advantage. It keeps a lot of people from noticing how "flexible" he is about issues that may hurt his chances of re-election. I have heard Trump supported and contributed to Obama's campaign and voted for him. Could this be his way of contributing again, on a larger scale?

Surely there are more important issues Mr. Bennett can stir up some debate over with his biased cartoons.

Rick,

Sound bite rhetoric, cherry picking and displaced context only highlight your lack of intellectual integrity and ignorance of history. The president says he’s not a socialist, and the country’s most outspoken socialists heartily agree.(LOOK IT UP) The only people who seem to think Obama displays even the slightest social democratic tendency are those who are told to imagine that the very mention of the word “socialism” should inspire a reaction like that of a vampire confronted by sunlight.

The New York Times asked the president whether his domestic policies suggested he was a socialist. “The answer would be no.” He said he was being criticized simply because he was “making some very tough choices” on the budget. He then continued, “It was hard for me to believe that you were entirely serious about that socialist question.” Then Obama declared, “It wasn’t under me that we started buying a bunch of shares of banks. And it wasn’t on my watch that we passed a massive new entitlement, the prescription drug plan, without a source of funding.” “We’ve actually been operating in a way that has been entirely consistent with free-market principles,” said Obama, who concluded with the kicker, “Some of the same folks who are throwing the word ‘socialist’ around can’t say the same.”

And I personally might add, the Bush administrations ‘no questions asked’ bailout of Wall Street is a clear vindication of Socialism in the marketplace! Had they been left to their own devices, they would have been strangled to death by the Invisible Hand of the free market. Ie. ‘Socialism for the rich, Capitalism for the rest.’

We are in the midst of economic, social and environmental challenges that demand a range of responses. Socialists certainly don’t have all the answers, conservatives don’t want to even try - and polling suggests that more Americans find appeal in the word “socialist” today than they have in decades. But without socialist ideas and advocacy, there isn’t sufficient counterbalance to an anti-government impulse that has less to do with libertarianism than with manipulation by all-powerful corporations.

The socialist epithets are a red herring, a distraction away from a Republican establishment, which is only too happy to invest its capital in a communist system, just as long as there is profit to be made. If Republicans were worried about government control and regulation they wouldn't be building factories in China. Now, as always, the Grand Old Party is all about the exploitation of labor - and to use whatever coercion, force, regulation, intimidation and punishment as is required………

…………………to make us all happy.

Harp3339 said: “Socialism by any other name is still socialism and we have it in spades. . . We will have it and progressively become more of a socialist country whether some want it or not. . . The 3rd & 4th generation since 1776 is here, that is how long it takes for a dynasty to become so big and involved through out the world it is unmanageable and leaders assume more and more control of the masses.”

I just don’t understand your thinking, Harp3339. It’s obvious that our greatest social/economic worry should be about income inequalilty and the fact that the U.S. is well on its way to beome a banana republic. Clearly, this is a profound change from 1776, but you don’t seem to have even noticed. But maybe you’re just waiting for a formal announcement from some unknown banana republican leader:

“In my reporting, I regularly travel to banana republics notorious for their inequality. In some of these plutocracies, the richest 1 percent of the population gobbles up 20 percent of the national pie.

But guess what? You no longer need to travel to distant and dangerous countries to observe such rapacious inequality. We now have it right here at home . . .

The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

C.E.O.’s of the largest American companies earned an average of 42 times as much as the average worker in 1980, but 531 times as much in 2001. Perhaps the most astounding statistic is this: From 1980 to 2005, more than four-fifths of the total increase in American incomes went to the richest 1 percent.”

I see nothing wrong with increasing opportunities for people to earn their own wealth. I see nothing wrong with accommodating the corporations and small businesses that are capable of doing that. Taxing success to any extreme and providing more hand outs will not equalize incomes any more than spitting in the ocean will raise sea level. It isn't income inequality or distribution of wealth that makes a country what you call a banana republic but their lack of leadership. Taxing and demonizing achievers won't correct what ails this country.
