Off the couch: Revival concert a '70s flashback

Monday, August 1, 2011

LISA DENTON: Barry, you'll get your chance to relive the '70s in Southern-rock style Saturday as Riverfront Nights kicks off. Revival - An Allman Brothers Experience should bring back some memories for a lot of folks - although the people who experienced everything the '70s had to offer probably have very little memory of the era.

BARRY COURTER: Already on it. I've pulled the cut-off jean shorts and my "Keep on Truckin'" T-shirt out of storage, and I've taken my leather sandals to Vanderstoops for some repairs. If they can't fix them, I'll have to rock the Converse and tube socks. I can't find my red, white and blue terrycloth headband though. Dang.

LISA: I'm not sure if that flashback is far out or just freaky-deaky. But I'm diggin' the threads, man. I should probably perm my hair before the show.

BARRY: Right on. Revival features a bunch of Atlanta-area musicians whose names - Lefty Williams, Benji Shanks, Steve Saunders, Preston Holcomb, Lex Luther and Ron Roper - might be recognizable to hard-core music snobs. They are serious about what they do.

LISA: Some people turn up their noses at tribute bands, but I appreciate how they're committed to keeping the music alive. And you can't argue with Revival's musical chops. And where else are you going to get to hear "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider" done in classic Allman Brothers style? The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Ross's Landing with opening act Nothing & The Nobodies.

BARRY: Isn't that a great name? Think they need a hug? One thing to note about Riverfront Nights: The folks running it have worked hard to make it dog-friendly, going so far as to create a VIP section for pooches. Pet owners should remember to clean up after your animal, of course. Actually, we all should, but you know what I mean.
