Chattanooga man dies during surgery after being shot in back

The night after Charles McCaine died during emergency surgery at a Chattanooga hospital, city police had no new information to release on the shooting that took his life.

Police spokesman Nathan Hartwig said in an email at 9:10 a.m. Saturday that McCaine was shot in the back during a home invasion at 2508 Latta St. about 1:30 a.m. He said police are looking for three suspects.

No new information was available at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Seven houses cluster on Latta Street. The house where McCaine was shot was dark and no one answered a knock on the door. One window was shattered and a pink-and-purple tricycle lay in the yard.

Court records show McCaine had been found guilty of burglary, theft and domestic assault in 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively. He also had a string of lesser drug and traffic charges.

Detectives ask that anyone with information about the three suspects call the police department at 423-698-2525.
