CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Bradley County school board extended Director Johnny McDaniel's contract by one year Thursday.

The county director of schools now has the four-year maximum allowed by state law on a contract.

Last month board member David Kelley suggested McDaniel compare his salary with those of directors of similar school systems. Kelley cited the high achievements of the system and suggested McDaniel's compensation should be increased.

McDaniel recommended no additional compensation for himself this year other than the 2 percent raise other system employees are receiving.

According to the Tennessee Education Association, McDaniel's salary is ranked 33rd in the state. McDaniel makes $112,600 per year, according to the system's 2010-11 budget.

"I am not asking the board to increase that salary beyond the raise employees received this year," McDaniel told board members. "During these economic times I just don't feel like that's something we need to do."

School board Chairman Troy Weathers said the board could vote on a contract of up to four years.

"The reason for that is that's the term limit if you are elected," he said.
