Baylor girls top Preview

Baylor has won a state championship in girl's golf every year since 1995 and shares the national record for the longest streak in the sport.

The Lady Raiders learned that claiming the national record for themselves will require a better performance than what they showed Monday and Tuesday in the Baylor Preview.

And they know Ensworth could be the team standing between the Lady Raiders and history.

Baylor fended off Ensworth 301 to 305 in the two-day tournament at Black Creek Club. Signal Mountain finished third at 324 followed by a 370 from Christian Academy of Knoxville.

"It's great to win as a team and good to know that we're on the right track to winning state again," said Baylor sophomore Blakesly Warren. "I just didn't play my best these couple days. I can improve on everything."

Warren, who shot a 7-over-par 149, finished runner-up to medalist Alexandra Farnsworth of Ensworth who shot a 1-over 143 at Black Creek Club which is undergoing renovation on hole No. 5 which is temporarily a par-3.

"This year, my short-game is a ton better," said Farnsworth, a sophomore who shot 70-73 in the tourney. "I followed a bad hole [a double-bogey on No. 10] with a par and then a birdie."

Knoxville Halls won the boy's championship at 582 with five seniors and a sixth as reserve. Jack Smith of Knoxville Webb earned medalist honors by shooting 4-under 138 and beating Stuart Thomas of Farragut with a birdie in a sudden-death playoff.

"We've got college coaches looking at our one through five players and our sixth man will probably go to a juco," Halls coach Bill Warren said. "We knew nobody was going to go deep here, and we've got a consistent team and we played consistent."

McCallie finished runner-up and 11 shots behind. Baylor finished sixth at 301 and Notre Dame finished 10th at 312.

"What I looked for today was guys competing and battling," McCallie coach Tony Meyers said. "This was a great chance to learn and to see a few competitors in our region."

And the Lady Raiders now know who their main competition will be for a national record.
