New opportunities for volunteers

AMEDISYS HOSPICE

  • Training: Volunteers needed to sit with terminally ill patients for physical, emotional and spiritual support. Free group or individual training available at your convenience. 499-0018.

HUMANE EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

  • Opportunities: Socialize with homeless animals to prepare and promote them for adoption. Help with cleaning, customer service and other tasks weekdays and Saturdays. Orientation and training provided. hesvolunteer@comcast.net.

HOSPICE OF CHATTANOOGA

  • Hospice of Chattanooga: Visit patients in homes, assisted-living facilities and local hospitals; offer clerical assistance in office.

  • Tuck-In Callers: Make telephone calls once a week to patients/families to ensure they have necessary supplies, medications, and/or support for the weekend. Volunteers are given training and script to follow for calls. 892-4289, ext. 23855.

McKAMEY ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION CENTER

  • Opportunities: Dog walking, cat cuddling, kennel cleaning, maintenance, assisting with off-site adoptions and special events. Orientation and animal-handling class required. Must be 16 or older and work two- to four-hour shift. 305-6503.

PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND ADULTS

  • Thrift Store Staff: Sort and organize donations, greet public and work in Dogwood Shop.

  • Advocacy Training: Training for sexual assault, court and hot-line advocates will begin Tuesday, Sept. 13. For more information and to register for either volunteer job, call 697-3830.

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES

  • Event Staff: Assistance needed staffing the Autumn Children's Festival Oct. 1-2 at the Tennessee Riverpark. Shifts are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 1-6 p.m. Saturday, or noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Placements include setup, cleanup, operation of carnival games, inflatables and parking. Call Ricky Robbins, 778-4333, or email ricky.robbins@rmhchattanooga.com.

SALVATION ARMY

  • Donation Drive Assistant: Collect essentials such as food, clothing, baby items for families in need.

  • Family Thrift Store Assistant: Help sort donations at thrift stores.

  • Homeless Shelter: Assist clients in the program with shelter upkeep and outreach programs.

  • Social Service: Assist caseworkers with client interviews, data entry, food pantry management.

  • Disaster Response: Assist Salvation Army personnel with emergency food service, shelter management; free training provided.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CENTER

To volunteer for any of these positions, call Windy Brooks at 752-0316, unless otherwise noted.

  • American Red Cross: Opportunities include data entry, class setup, stuffing envelopes and filing, assistance with special events and fundraising activities. Train to respond to local and national disaster events.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga: Mentor children ages 6-12 from single-parent homes; time commitment of 4-6 hours a month for a year in the community-based program, one hour a week during the school year for the site-based program.

  • Chattanooga Area Food Bank: Help assemble emergency food boxes for families, one day a week for two hours between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Must be able to lift 20 pounds and be 14 or older. 622-1800

  • Chattanooga CARES: Drive clients to medical appointments or grocery store; must be 18 or older, have valid driver's license, insurance and own vehicle.

  • Northside Neighborhood House: Research and price vintage items/collectibles donated to thrift store; time commitment of four hours a week.

  • On Point: Groundskeeper with lawn equipment needed, can set own schedule.

  • People Helping People: Help sort donations, 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

  • Public Education Foundation: Assist college advisers in Hamilton County public high schools. All training provided, must be 18 or older, minimum of four hours per month August-May.

  • Ringgold United Methodist Church: Individuals and groups still needed to assist with tornado cleanup. Plumbers and electricians especially needed. 706-935-2109 or 706-935-2199.

  • Rosewood Supportive Services: Deliver Meals on Wheels to elderly and disabled individuals between 9:45 and 10:15 a.m. until noon.

  • St. Barnabas Nursing Home: Assistance needed with resident activities such as bingo at 2 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Fridays and weekly parties at 1:30 Fridays.

  • The Tri-State Therapeutic Riding Center: The center provides horseback riding and equestrian education for individuals with disabilities. Opportunities include assisting with riding lessons, barn management, fundraising and public relations; flexible scheduling.
