New House district wraps up Northwest Georgia

The newly created 14th U.S. House Congressional District spans most of Northwest Georgia and trails south to include Polk, Haralson and Paulding counties.

The 9th district shifted east and now stretches to the South Carolina state line.

Georgia state legislators released the proposed U.S congressional district map this afternoon during their special session.

The state earned a new House seat because of its growing population, most of which has been in North Georgia.

In addition to the southernmost counties, the new district includes Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Walker, Whitfield and part of Pickens counties.

Ed Painter, a Dalton businessman who had advocated for a district that did not include eastern counties such as Hall and Forsyth, called the proposed map an “excellent district.”

“It is compact, keeps together a commonality of interest and broke up only one county,” Painter said. “And it is a competitive district. No single county will dominate.”

New plan will probably get rid of Barrow in south GA. The Dems have controlled redistricting in GA since Moses was a boy. Payback is going to be Hell! I can hear the whining from the Atlanta Journal from here.
