Two boys lit a mattress on fire today, leaving a family of eight temporarily without a home, officials say.

The investigation hasn't been finished so it's unclear whether the boys live at the house or if the fire was intentional, said Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner.

Chattanooga firefighters arrived at the home at 2109 E. 12th St. about 3 p.m. and found a mattress on fire in a bedroom, Garner said.

They were able to keep the fire in the bedroom, but the rest of the house suffered smoke damage, he said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, he said, and its cause is still being investigated.

The American Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the family, he said.
