ERIN, Wis. -- Former Baylor School golf teammates Harris English and Stephan Jaeger lost their matches in the round of 32 of the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship on Thursday at the Erin Hills course. Jaeger, now a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior, began the day by completing a 3 and 2 win over Auburn's Blayne Barber of Lake City, Fla., in the round of 64, but he then lost 1 up to NCAA champion John Peterson of Fort Worth, Texas. English, a U.S. Walker Cup member who just completed his University of Georgia career, fell 4 and 3 to Bobby Leopold of Cranston, R.I. English's Bulldogs teammate Russell Henley lost in 21 holes to Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif. Peterson and Jaeger took turns leading in their match, neither by more than one hole. Jaeger got even with a birdie on No. 17, but the former LSU standout won with a birdie on the 675-yard final hole. In the completion of Wednesday's suspended match, Jaeger quickly opened his 2-up lead to 3 up and closed out Barber with a par on No. 16.

• STATESBORO, Ga. -- Bill Leonard of Kennesaw, Ga., takes a one-shot lead into the final round of the Georgia Senior Championship golf tournament after shooting a 3-under-par 69 Thursday in the second round at Forest Heights Country Club. Three men are tied for second at even-par 144 with the low 70 players advancing. Lanny Bailey of Dalton finished at 169.

Volleyball

• UTC plays its first volleyball matches with Travis Filar as coach today at 1 and 4 p.m. EDT against Northwestern State of Louisiana and Southern Miss in the latter's invitational tournament in Hattiesburg. The Lady Mocs are set to play Jackson State on Saturday and will host Belmont at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Maclellan Gymnasium. Senior middle blocker Ellie Kuhn and junior Paula Passmore, the 2010 Southern Conference libero of the year, head the UTC returners, and juniors Heather Parman and Christina Teter and sophomore Andrea Johnson from local high schools are among the outside and right-side hitters with talent and experience. Sophomore Jennifer Kuroski is battling Parman for the starting outside job. Freshman Melissa Green from Boca Raton, Fla., has been pushing Passmore in practice. Sophomore Tess Kosycarz and transfer Bridget Camacho from Virginia Commonwealth provide experience at setter.

• Tennessee Temple University played to the wire in its volleyball season opener Thursday night before falling to visiting Judson College of Alabama, 17-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15, 16-14. Freshman libero Annie London from Madison, Ala., "played phenomenal" in making digs, Temple coach Amy Bordean said, and sophomore Natasha Ferreti from Brazil led the Lady Crusaders in assists and service points. Sophomore LaQuinta Gallishaw was the team leader in kills. Senior outside hitter Kaye Johnson, freshman middle hitter KaShae Reddicks from South Pittsburg, freshman Hannah Sullivan, P.J. Sexton and sophomore Lynncoya Gardner were others in the main rotation for Bordean.

Soccer

• PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sophomore Ashley Aragona's goal 7:23 into the game held up Thursday night for a 1-0 win for the NAIA's top-ranked Lee University women's soccer team in its season opener against third-ranked host Concordia University. Ode Fulutudilu, another sophomore, got credit for an assist on the goal Aragona scored off a deflection from 5 yards out. Lee was outshot 7-5 in the first half, when goalkeeper Leah Wilson made five of her six saves, but allowed only two shots while taking nine after halftime. Lee, the three-time defending national champion, will stay in Portland and face No. 2 Azusa Pacific on Saturday.

Basketball

• Former Dade County High School post standout Andrew Reid already had been reported as a 2011 basketball signee for Young Harris (Ga.) College, but Mountain Lions coach Pete Herrmann officially announced the four recruits Thursday and included comments about the 6-foot-9, 225-pound second-team All-North Georgia selection. "Andrew played in a very high-octane type of offense in high school," Herrmann said in the school release. "He is capable of scoring the ball well from the perimeter as well as the post." Reid averaged 14 points and 9.2 rebounds as a senior for the 25-5 Wolverines. Young Harris will host Bryan College in its Nov. 12 season opener.

Baseball

• Gordon Lee Middle School players Tucker Bradley and Chaney Rogers were chosen to represent the Mid-Atlantic Region in the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series and will join others selected for games at the national training complex in Cary, N.C., beginning on Sept. 9. The NTIS staff held multiple evaluation events in picking 13-, 15- and 17-under teams from the region's six states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. "We are very excited about the teams in each of the three age groups that we were able to put together for Team Mid-Atlantic," regional director Jeff Schaefer said in a release.
