'Occupy' protests' million-dollar tab

So-called "Occupy Wall Street" protesters around the country are critical of the excesses of corporations that they believe are making "too much" money. But they seem to have no qualms about forcing taxpayers in the cities where they are demonstrating to rack up excessive costs to manage the protests.

The Associated Press did a survey of just 18 of the cities where the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations have been taking place. It found police overtime and other services cost taxpayers in those cities alone at least $13 million over a two-month period. That does not include the expense of handling the protests in many other cities around the nation, so the true cost is almost certainly millions of dollars more.

In Atlanta alone, just two weeks of managing the demonstrations cost the city nearly half a million dollars, as protesters deliberately ignored reasonable time, place and manner restrictions on their activities.

In Los Angeles, protesters have done an estimated $200,000 worth of damage to a park. Asked about that harm, one demonstrator casually dismissed such concerns. He told the AP, "We're here fighting corporate greed and they're worried about a lawn?"

Don't taxpayers have a right to be worried about the destruction of public property for which they paid good money?

In Oakland, Calif., meanwhile, protesters forcibly shut down a major port, and authorities expect the cost of dealing with the protests there to exceed $3 million.

"The cost of the encampments is growing and putting a strain on our already fragile resources -- police, public works and other city staff," Mayor Jean Quan said.

It is long past time for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators to renounce the lawbreaking methods of some of their number, and embrace the peaceful, orderly free-assembly rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

It is unconscionable that, instead, they are endangering public safety and property, and sending the bill for their illegal behavior to the very Americans they claim to support.

News Flash, this "cost" is not a drop in the bucket compared to the TRILLIONS the banksters and their army of lobbyists have cost our nation! These "costs" are also self-induced ,why call out hundreds of para-military police for non-violent protestors? Is it because, unlike the corporate sponsored "tea-party",the grassroots OWS movement actually scares the powers that be?

And to think people like Acerigger CLAIM they are not involved in class warfare, that's amazing but not surprising. And to think the OWS really represents all grassroots Americans, that is neither funny nor comprehendible. As for the powers that be, they shake not for anyone and cannot currently be called to account. And changing the party does very little to help as we have seen. But keep on believing the real criminals are the ones who have and make wealth. Keep on believing the patriots are people who do not even really put out clearly what their message is except for the continued liberal slogan of "THE RICH ARE EVIL AND WE ALL DESERVE SOME OF THEIR WEALTH!" For that to be considered true grassroots, is a joke but not laughable.

The majority of americans don't identify with the supposed 99%, but these wonderful organizations do: http://pjmedia.com/zombie/2011/10/31/the-99-official-list-of-ows/

That list tells me all I need to know about OWS. Stealing yet more money from us through their "peacful" rapes, drug use, vandalism, pollution, harrasment, and other stupidity is just more of the same. The L.A. group generated and left 30 tons of trash. They are currently contributing all they ever will to this country.

Chet, delusional as always, the only people now attempting to describe the civil rights heroes as communist or socialist are the progressives. MLK is on record as believing in freedom and self-reliance. You should read his "I have a dream" speech here. http://www.usconstitution.net/dream.html

33% does not a majority make. From the pages of a progressive news site. I agree, it is a hate link, but I wouldn't call it right wing. I believe it even shows there are more against ows than for it.

You wrote " It is not about having money. It is about using money to buy government ".

So you want people to believe you are opposed to the many teachers unions, labor unions, the AARP, homosexual groups, abortion groups, to name some, soliciting donations and funneling money to Demoncrats for the express purpose of passing legislation favorable to their agendas?

The sanctimonious hypocrisy of this writer continues unabated. $13 million cost to tax payers to protest this robbery is denounced as unconscionable, but are corporations who get billions in tax payer subsidies and those who caused the economic disaster through their greed and are then bailed out by tax payers ever the object of his self-righteous ire? Protesters’ $200,000 damage to a public lawn is not to be tolerated, but is corporate stealing millions from public lands ever denounced?

And conservative, L4L, FPSE, are zombie-like swallowing this pap. It’s been said that the Republican party, whose policies these commenters seem to support, is the party of the very rich and the very stupid. I will assume the aforementioned must be very rich.

L4F: Who, besides you, is saying that, “the rich are evil and we all deserve some of their wealth”? I assume you mean those wicked liberals believe that. Actually what those liberals believe is that if you work harder and thus increase your employer’s profits, it’s not unreasonable to expect a share of those profits. Not all of the profits, just a fair share. That’s exactly what has been happening, except for the sharing part. That’s when some consider the rich evil.

Now, if you are an employer, I can see how you might object to sharing the fruits of your employee’s harder work. You are in it for the money, you want to make as much of it as you can. Of course. If you are not an employer, and still object to sharing, you’re a fool and I want to hire you. (You seem to understand that I have a right to make as much money from my investment in machines as I can and you have no right to make as much money from your investment in your labor as you can. I’m glad you see that anything which prevents me from making as much money as I can is a socialist plot.) I’ll pay you for working 39 hours a week, if you work 1 more hour and I’d have to provide you with insurance. Oh, and the work day starts the minute you turn on your machine, not when you arrive in my factory. Sometimes you’ll have to run two machines, but I’ll pay you 25% more per hour as long as you maintain the production level of both machines. Otherwise.... You know these are difficult times and lots of people are looking for jobs. And the time you spend cleaning your work station at the end of the day, that’s not part of your work day. I can’t be expected to pay you for cleaning up the mess you made while you were working. If this job doesn’t appeal to you, you have the freedom to refuse it. This is a capitalist system, after all. I know you agree with it.

Good! I'll say it agian the mounting cost is a Great thing! Let's continue down the growing OWS highway. What will be the end result will the powers that be, also known as the pocket dwellers of the 1%, stand up and force change to benefit the obviously discontented masses that are just plain fed up with greed that permeates every second of the lives the 1% live or, will the same pocket dwellers push for more wasted costs to force "free Americans" to give up more of their american rights to oppose the never ending greed of the 1%??? It's an interesting debate. Unfortunately it's obviously apparent that the 1% have not even noticed the growing trend of the 99%. They continue to sit in their kingdoms and continue to enjoy the undeserved lives they live. If the system cannot be equal well then keep up the OWS movement and bankrupt the system. What will the 1% do when they have nothing to leech off of. It is a horrific image that comes to my mind. The image of no more America. In the end it will not be terrorists it will be our own greedy 1% that destroys a once great nation. To all of you 1% supporters i say this "change has to come or else our children and our grandchildren will suffer from our stubborn refusal to see whats right in front of us"!!!

Name corporations who are getting the tax payer subsidies. I hope you aren't talking about the oil companies, they receive tax breaks like all manufacturers, not subsidies.

December 1, 2011 at 1:59 p.m.

As to your stupidity with profit sharing, if you are working at a company and working hard and never get a raise even though you go above and beyond what you are expected to do, you should move on to another company that rewards hard work. You are FREE to move on. Nothing is forcing you to continue to be abused by a greedy employer. You have responsibility for your own actions. Quit trying to blame someone else if you make a stupid decision.

Ilod, this is a republic not a democracy. I don't blame you for not knowing that. Public schools are being run into the ground by socialists.

I wonder what the OWS horde thinks about Michelle Obama decorating the White House with 37 Christmas trees and a 400 poung gingerbread house, or her dining on swordfish sliders and an edible chocolate sculpture the other day? Also,I guess she wasn't satisfied with all the chefs in the White House, so she snuck out to a fancy, shmancy restuarant, on the taxpayers dime of course.

FPSE: Corporate subsidies : Archer Daniels Midland, “43% of its annual profits come from products heavily subsidized by the federal government.” http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa241es.html

“The Export-Import Bank ($700 million a year) uses taxpayer dollars to provide subsidized financing to foreign purchasers of U.S. goods.” http://www.cato.org/pubs/handbook/hb105-9.html

A list of farm operations that raked in more than $55 million in 2009. http://www.ewg.org/report/congress-must-finally-put-end-direct-payments

Between 1990-1994 corporate welfare to GM totalled over $110 million, it shed 104.000 jobs. IBM received $58 million, shed 100,000 jobs, Citicorp got $9.6 million and shed 15,700 workers. The complete list and other information at http://www.corporations.org/welfare/

Are you that naive that you really believe that employees would stay with an abusive employer if they could find another job? Oh, yeah, if they only knew that kind hearted fellow citizens like you would allow them unemployment benefits and health insurance until they found an employer that didn’t steal their labor, they’d quit tomorrow. And there are so many employers out there just fighting to get workers. You really need to get professional help. These delusions are getting seriously scary.

OK, so you say profit sharing is stupid and I say it is fair. We disagree. I must warn you, though, selfishness is not a socially useful nor personally ennobling trait, however.

Actually, the United States is a republic a democracy. You could argue that the democracy has been perverted, I would agree, but it is still a democracy. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and a democracy. China is a republic and a dictatorship. I don’t blame you for not knowing that the two are not mutually exclusive. It’s obvious you don’t really know much but you do have a very active imagination and do some powerful wishful thinking, I’ll say that for you.

December 1, 2011 at 4:05 p.m.

The U.S. is currently a democratic republic. Not a "republic a democracy"? whatever that is. I am not sure what your point is with the rest of that false crap. China is a communist country and the UK has a parlimentary democracy with executive powers resting with the monarch.

Any employee getting paid is getting a share of the profits. It is a share agreed to before they are hired. Anyone who makes a deal they don't like must take responsibility for their own actions. I am not saying they can't negotiate for more after they have proven themselves, but they certainly can't demand it. If an employee is being abused by a company, and CHOOSES to stay because they have no other marketable skills, I would say that is a lack of planning on their part. That is their own fault. They can't blame that on anyone else. There are lots of employers out there fighting to get qualified workers. Just hit the jobs pages of the major employers around chattanooga and look at all the jobs just waiting for the right candidates. There are lots of opportunities out there for the prepared.

Your premise that an employer is stealing the profit from the workers is insane. The worker agrees to a job before he is hired. Any work done beyond the requirement is a donation to the business since it wasn't asked for and wasn't in the original agreement. The only way the company could steal the workers product would be for them to neglect to pay them as agreed prior to hiring them.

You do realize you mentioned farm subsidies twice right? ADM doesn't receive any subsidies, they receive heavily subsidized goods from the farmers who receive the subsidies. Most farmers are not part of huge corporations and the goverment is the one paying them the subsidies so that the price of the goods they produce are more affordable for companies like ADM. I don't agree with these subsidies, but if they didn't exist, I have a hunch you would be whining and crying about their expensive food. Your misguided anger at these companies seems to be misplaced. The politicians that approve the subsidies are who you should be bad mouthing. It all seems to lead back to our corrupt politicians. You seem to think fact is imagination. Weird.
