Sad news for elderly at St. Barnabas apartments

Friday, January 1, 1904

For many years, the St. Barnabas Apartments, at Sixth and Pine streets in Chattanooga, have provided popular retirement living for some of our community's older citizens. But times and circumstances change.

Now the 45-year-old facility will yield to new development, so its residents must make new arrangements within a few months.

The apartments reportedly have been surviving financially on subsidies from the organization's nursing home. But with revenue failing to cover expenses, it became impossible to continue as things were -- barring massive increases in rental rates and additional funding.

The 40 staff members will transfer to the other St. Barnabas facility. Meanwhile, they will help residents find other accommodations.

"There's no place like home," and we regret the difficulties that those who have enjoyed St. Barnabas may have making the necessary change.
