Fruit Juice Spherification invites families to play with their food

How often are you told it's OK to play with your food? The Creative Discovery Museum, 321 Chestnut St., is giving you permission.

Simple chemistry and some uncommon, nontoxic ingredients will be used to "magically" create spheres made of fruit juice in a new science demonstration at the children's museum.

There are several dates for families to participate in this unusual event: Monday-Dec. 23, Dec. 27-30 and Jan. 2-6.

Fruit Juice Spherification is a type of molecular cooking experiment that is widely popular and progressive in innovative restaurants around the world.

"You would have to travel a great distance and spend a large amount of money to be able to experience the latest in molecular gastronomy," said Karen Dewhirst, museum experience manager. "Playing with food is a fun way to develop a child's interest in cooking, chemistry and trying new foods."

Fruit Juice Spherification is free with museum admission of $10.95 Registration is not required.

The CDM is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sundays. While on its winter schedule, the museum is closed most Wednesdays, but it will be open the next three (Dec. 21, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4) for the Fruit Juice Spherification experiments. The museum will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
