Sewanee teams rally past Petrels

Dana Middleton scored 36 points, one short of Sophie Brawner's program record, as Sewanee rallied to defeat visiting Oglethorpe 66-63 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball Friday night.

Sewanee then won the men's game 61-60, overcoming an even bigger halftime deficit (35-19) than the female Tigers. Valentino Bryant had 23 points, four assists and three steals and Tyler Brown had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Sewanee guys (5-3, 1-2), while Anvil Nelson tallied 10 points. Andrew Steioff led the Stormy Petrels (4-6, 0-2) with 22 points.

Middleton made five of 13 3-point shots and 11 of 13 free throws for the Sewanee women (5-3, 1-2), who trailed 40-29 at halftime. Alex Ginsburg and Kayla Sewell added 11 and nine points and seven and 11 rebounds, Sewell also blocking three shots. Riley Cerone had team highs of 15 points and five assists for the Petrels (3-6, 0-2).

• At Young Harris, the Lee men lost 87-84 to Virginia Intermont in the Flames' first game without head coach Tommy Brown and assistant Josh Templeton. They are serving a four-game suspension.

Joshua Hart had 28 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots and Neven Raspudic and Justin Morris combined for 27 points for Intermont (8-5), which never trailed in the second half but let a 74-66 lead shrink to 80-79 when Lee's Duran Blue hit a 3-point shot with two minutes left. Alex Wells was 6-of-8 on 3s in scoring 20 points for the Flames (5-3), who got 16 points from Ryan Westbrooks, 12 points and six assists from Tyrone Caldwell and 10 points and seven rebounds from Josh Henley.

• At Tennessee Temple, the Bryan Lady Lions improved to 10-1 with an 83-71 win over the Lady Crusaders, now 0-13.

• Thursday night at Rome, the Georgia Northwestern Lady Cats lost a 12-point halftime lead in a 72-71 NJCAA Region XVII defeat by West Georgia Tech, which got 26 points from Ebonie Harris and 22 from Cherish Evans. Joy Hoskins scored 17 and Mia Morrow 14 for GNTC, while Jessica Williams had 12 and Boo McPherson and Kelsie Philpot added 11 each.
