After wasting no time in taking command early, Baylor's girls basketball team closed out its opening round win just as strong in a 50-23 win over Northwest Whitfield in the Best of Preps tournament.

The Lady Red Raiders jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, then held the Lady Bruins scoreless in the fourth quarter until a meaningless layup with two seconds remaining.

"That's the way we need to play every game," Baylor coach John Gibson said. "We fed off the confidence that our defense gave us, knocked down some open shots and rebounded well.

"It was huge for us to get out to a big early lead, and I was really proud of the way we continued to play strong, even after we the big lead late."

After taking a 16-point lead by halftime, Baylor continued to pull away in the third and allowed just seven points in the second half.

Megan Ausdran, one of three senior starters for Baylor, led all scorers with 15 points.

"This is as healthy as we've been all season," Gibson said. "We've had a couple of starters banged up and a tough early season schedule, but this shows what we can do once we're healthy."
