SWAT team answers call in Hamilton County

Friday, December 23, 2011

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office SWAT team responded to Haycutter Road about 9:30 a.m. where a man had barricaded himself inside his room threatening to shoot others and himself.

Negotiators with the sheriff's office weren't able to talk Matthew Groves, 28, out of his bedroom, according to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson. His family members said that he didn't have access to a weapon, but when the deputies tried to open the door, Groves fired shots through a wall.

The SWAT team then used pepper spray to detain Groves, who had shot himself in the chest.

Groves was transported to a local hospital about 5 p.m., according to Atkinson. His condition is unknown.
