SWAT team pulls man from home

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office SWAT team responded to Haycutter Road about 9:30 a.m. Friday where a man had barricaded himself inside his room threatening to shoot others and himself.

Negotiators with the sheriff's office weren't able to talk Matthew Groves, 28, out of his bedroom, according to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson. Family members said that he didn't have a weapon, but when the deputies tried to open the door, Groves fired shots through a wall.

The SWAT team then used pepper spray to detain Groves, who had shot himself in the chest. Groves was taken to a local hospital about 5 p.m., according to Atkinson. His condition is unknown.

Police investigate Wendy's robbery

Police continue to investigate a robbery at Wendy's restaurant in which two men wearing masks robbed employees at gunpoint just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to police reports.

One man jumped the counter at the restaurant at 5200 Brainerd Road, brandishing a gun. He demanded cash from the drive-through register as well as one of the registers at the front counter. A total of $609 was taken, according to police reports.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.

Police identify pedestrian killed

A pedestrian struck and killed while trying to cross Lee Highway on Thursday night has been identified as 29-year-old Ericka Hullander.

Hullander stepped into a lane of traffic in the 8000 block as a van was passing and was struck about 6:45 p.m., said Sgt. Jerri Weary, spokeswoman for Chattanooga Police Department.

No one has been charged in the death, which remains under investigation. Hullander was crossing in a dimly lit area and was clad in dark clothing. The driver of the van told police he did not see her until he struck her.

Hullander was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police search for bank bandit

Police are looking for a man who robbed a store employee of more than $2,000 while making a night deposit at a bank just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to Chattanooga police reports.

An employee from Finish Line rolled down his car window to place a deposit bag in the night drop box when a man with a thin build, wearing a black toboggan with white skull face, brandished a "shiny chrome" semiautomatic handgun.

"Give me all the money," he said, grabbing the bag at the First Tennessee Bank branch at 2173 Northgate Park Lane, according to the reports.

The robber was last seen going between the El Meson Mexican restaurant and a large office building.

Officers were not able to find anyone matching the description. The robber was wearing an oversized hooded red sweatshirt. A total of $2,317 was taken.
