The Tennessee Department of Transportation will close the Marion Memorial Bridge on U.S. Highway 41 in Marion County indefinitely on Jan. 9 while work continues on the new replacement bridge alongside it, officials said Tuesday.
The closure will delay the replacement project’s completion date until February 2014, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Officials decided on the closure after crews discovered unexpected problems with subsurface materials under the riverbed that require deeper excavation for concrete footings for the new bridge’s piers, officials said.
TDOT will post detour routes when the bridge is closed, officials said. Some residents might have to detour as much as 1.5 miles to circumnavigate the closed bridge.

It's a beautiful piece of our history,I hope it can be preserved.
Yes I agree with that, maybe someone would put in a riverwalk area between the marina and the camp ground and generate some much needed funds for that area. Many other cities in teneesee have this already and it brings tourism and money from the outside. Just a thought:)
