FAMILY VIOLENCE PROGRAM OF CLEVELAND

* Children's Programs: Provide a one-hour uplifting program for children up to age 13.

* Office Assistance: Help with clerical work, distribute brochures for community events.

* Outreach: Organize and execute speaking events, assist with volunteer recruitment, assist court advocate with clients.

* Shelter Assistance: Sort and store donations, work a shift on 24-hour hot line, assist with yard work or interior cleaning.

Training provided for all opportunities; time commitment of four hours a week for eight months is required. 752-0316.

HUMANE EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

* Opportunities: Socialize with homeless animals to prepare them for adoption. Help with cleaning, customer service and other tasks on weekdays and Saturdays. Orientation and training provided. hesvolunteer@comcast.net.

MCKAMEY ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION CENTER

* Opportunities: Dog walking, cat cuddling, kennel cleaning, maintenance, assisting with off-site adoptions and special events. Orientation and animal-handling class required. Must be 16 or older and work two- to four-hour shift. 305-6503.

PARTNERSHIP FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN AND ADULTS

* Tutors: Work with children and adults on literacy skills.

* Test Proctor: Help needed 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays or 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

* Test Administrator: Give TABE assessment test and the official practice test.

* Instructional Assistant: Tutor one-to-one or in small groups to help students master skills, manage classroom materials, organize student folders; flexible scheduling 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or 4-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, or 8:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. or 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

SALVATION ARMY

* Donation Drive Assistant: Collect food, clothing, baby items for families in need.

* Family Thrift Store Assistant: Help sort donations at thrift stores.

* Homeless Shelter: Assist clients with shelter upkeep and outreach programs.

* Social Service: Assist caseworkers with client interviews, data entry, food pantry management.

* Disaster Response: Assist Salvation Army personnel with emergency food service, shelter management; free training.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CENTER

* AIM Center: AmeriCorps volunteers sought as job mentor, education specialist, peer specialist, benefit specialist and intake assessment. Must be 18 or older and commit to one year.

* Alzheimer's Association: Receptionist/office assistance 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

* American Red Cross: Opportunities include data entry, class setup, stuffing envelopes and filing, special events and fundraising activities.

* Arts & Education Council: Help with administrative tasks in the office, public relations and event coordination.

* Center for Individual and Family Effectiveness: Clerical/office assistant needed and computer networking consultant with expertise in installation and maintenance of servers.

* Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce: Lead career-readiness programs for students. Options include eighth-grade Career Crunch, ninth-grade Reality Check, 10th-grade Get a Job, 11th-grade Who Wants To Be a Millionaire (money management) and 11th- and 12th-grade College and Career Fair.

* Chattanooga Area Food Bank: Help assemble emergency food boxes for families, one day a week for two hours between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Must be able to lift 20 pounds and be 14 or older. 622-1800

* Chattanooga Cares: Drive clients to medical appointments or grocery store; must be 18 or older, have valid driver's license, insurance and own vehicle.

* Chattanooga Furniture Bank: Pick up and unload furniture donations, drivers must have own insurance; flexible scheduling 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

* Chattanooga Zoo: Assistance needed Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays to help with animal care and exhibit maintenance; also have openings for docents.

* Foster Grandparent Program: Mentor special and exceptional-needs children, ages infants to 21; must be 55 or older and meet low-income eligibility levels. Volunteers serve 20 hours a week in day-care centers, mentoring sites, schools, hospitals and Head Start centers.

* H-Art Gallery: Nonprofit needs art teachers to mentor homeless to make and sell their artwork; flexible scheduling.

* Hamilton County Sheriff's Office: Staff the Information Desk in the Courts Building to assist visitors to the correct court or clerk. Shifts available 7:30-11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Minimum of one shift per week commitment; should have working knowledge of computer use and accessing e-mails.

* Hospice of Chattanooga: Visit patients in homes, assisted- living facilities and local hospitals; offer clerical assistance in office.

* Inner City Ministry: After-school program in First-Centenary United Methodist Church needs tutors and volunteers to help with homework, read to younger children, teach math facts, call spelling words and help with research papers. Flexible scheduling 3:30-5:45 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

* Northside Neighborhood House: Research and price thrift store donations; four hours a week

* Pet Placement Center: Socialize and care for adoptable dogs and cats, help with off-site adoption/fundraising events and administrative tasks. Adults needed, but ages 10-14 allowed with parent; training provided. E-mail kerry@thalppc.com.

* Rosewood Supportive Services: Deliver Meals on Wheels to elderly and disabled individuals between 9:45 and 10:15 a.m. until noon.

* St. Andrews Arts Academy: Read, assist with homework and art assignments, play games with children in after-school program, 3-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Volunteers must be 18 or older and submit to a background check.

* United Way 2-1-1 Call Center: Relieve staff two hours a day; 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. weekdays or 2-5 p.m. alternate Fridays; requires computer skills, training provided.
