15-year-old shot Saturday night

Chattanooga police say a teen was wounded during a shoot-out at a party Saturday night.

Police were called about 9 a.m. Sunday to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital to question the 15-year-old boy, who had a gunshot wound in his left upper leg.

The boy at first told police he had received the wound in a drive-by shooting near 1404 E. 16th St., according to a police news release.

While investigating, police learned officers had been called to that address Saturday night on a report of shots fired at a party. By the time officers arrived Saturday night, no one admitted to calling police, and the officers didn't locate anything unusual.

Police spokeswoman Rebecca Royval said investigators today received information that the victim and another juvenile male pulled guns on one another at the party and began shooting.

Because the victim concealed being shot for more than 10 hours and was dishonest with police, Royval said the case is pending further investigation.

The victim has been treated and released from the hospital, Royval said.

Fire destroys Birchwood home

A family of 10 lost its home and possessions in a house fire Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency Services spokeswoman Amy Maxwell said in a news release that a 911 call at 3 p.m. reported a fire at 5570 Johnson Road in the Birchwood area.

The Highway 58 department arrived to find flames coming through the roof.

Highway 58 Fire Chief Charles Harris said no one was home when the fire broke out.

The homeowner, Cindy Leroy, had taken the family to the grocery store and got a call from her brother saying her house was on fire. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and will be under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. Seventy-five percent of the house is destroyed, and damages are listed about $70,000. The American Red Cross will be assisting Leroy, another adult and eight children, Maxwell said.

Pit bull attack injures two

A mother and her grown daughter were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after being bitten by their pet pit bull on Russell Street, according to McKamey Animal Services.

"The women were arguing, and the dog was agitated and got involved," said Karen Walsh, executive director of McKamey.

Walsh said the mother's thigh was severely injured and the daughter's leg and arm were badly bitten.

The owners relinquished the dog to be euthanized, Walsh said.
