Hamilton County: 23 arrested for not paying child support

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office served 35 warrants and arrested 23 people Wednesday for failing to pay their child support, according to a news release.

They conducted a joint operation with the Chattanooga Police Department and Lookout Mountain Police Department. Five teams made up detectives from all three agencies who covered all of Hamilton County, according to the release from the sheriff’s office.

Those arrested in today’s operation have a combined outstanding balance of $26,408.00, which they will be required to pay before they will be being released from custody.

A parent who dont support the child they created should be in jail..These deadbeat parents should rot in jail, I put them in the same class as rapist and murderers, They rather let their kids starve than work and pay child support. I hope they dont let them out of jail till payments has been made in full to the parent with custody.

Deadbeat dads seem to be the norm today. They depend on taxpayer money to take care of their kids.

So, how does this benefit the children or, for that matter, the taxpayers? Now you have more people sucking off the taxpayers tits? The children, if they receive any kind of public assistance, and the deadbeat parent who are locked up in jail.

I agree, those who can pay should, but those already working at some low wage job or are out of work, there should be a job bank giving them the opportunity to work and pay childsupport. There's a difference between not paying when you can and not paying because you don't have the means to pay. Then with a prison record it's going to be even tougher for those individuals to get a job in order to pay childsupport. If they had some low wage job before it's not going to be there waiting on them when they're released.

Finally, it's the law of the land that you can't jail someone for an inability to pay a debt. I see the potential for a class action on the horizon.

Did CPD and the sheriffs dept. arrest any of their own who are behind on C.S.? Or did they give'em all a chance to bring themselves up to date before going out on their little P.R. adventure?
