Chattamoms: Child carrier helps save mom's back

REASONS TO WORK OUT AT NIGHTAt 10:30 p.m. when the house is asleep and the bed is calling, why am I really working out? I'm not proud of some of these answers, but they are the truth.1. Vanity. I'm not ashamed to admit it: Vanity is a great motivator. I like my old clothes, and I like how I looked in them.2. Pride. I want to prove something to myself and to others.3. Sex. Truly, I think the fact that I just gave him an offspring should trump how I look in a negligee for a while.4. Time. I want at least 30 minutes a day that belongs to me and only me. Sometimes, you just need to turn it off to tune it out.Hybrid Mom, www.hybridmom.com

The American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons advises moms not to carry growing babies on their hips, because it can stress back muscles. Child carriers are one hands-free answer.

New moms are advised to wear carriers in the front. But when hiking or enjoying outdoor activities, moms may want to opt for a back carrier so baby is protected during a front fall.

The Kelty TC 2.0 is a dual child carrier and knapsack. The carrier has an adjustable harness, padded shoulder straps and a waist belt to help distribute weight evenly. It also has a padded back panel for comfort while carrying. The carrier has a 40-pound weight limit, and it is likely most comfortable for babies 7 months and older who have the ability to hold themselves upright. After age 2, parents should plan on packing fewer items in the knapsack to accommodate the weight limit.
