Lady Mocs lose twice in softball

CLEREMONT, Fla.-The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team was done in by the long ball Saturday at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Invitational, losing 3-1 to Florida Atlantic and 6-1 to Georgia Tech.

The two losses dropped the Lady Mocs to 1-3 for the season heading into today's game against Fordham to wrap up the event.

Michelle Fuzzard pitched in her first game of the season against Florida Atlantic and was effective over seven innings, allowing only four hits and striking out three. However, two of those hits and a walk came in the sixth inning, when FAU's Rose Gressley hit a three-run home run.

UTC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Kasey Tydingco scored on a bunt by Lauren Flores. Flores, Tydingco, Kaiti Dutton and Tiffany Baker had the four UTC hits against Florida Atlantic's Taylor Fawbush.

In the second game, Nikki Waters got the start for UTC and struggled against Georgia Tech, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. The big blows for the Yellow Jackets were homers by Kelsi Weseman and Hope Rush. Weseman finished 2-for-3 with two runs, and Georgia Tech center fielder Christy Jones went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

UTC scored its lone run in the fifth inning when Tydingco led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Vivian Morimoto.

UTC shortstop Jessica Traxler went 3-for-3 against the Yellow Jackets.
