Free food, T-shirts at Mocs game

BARRY COURTER: Lisa, I know you share my feelings about free food -- we're both for it -- but the Mocs basketball team is also throwing in free clothes with its latest promotion. For their game tonight at McKenzie Arena, the UTC folks are hosting a "blackout" party where the first 3,000 fans through the gates will get a free T-shirt. Everybody will get a voucher for a free hot dog, a bag of popcorn and a Coke. (Let it be noted that if I have to explain to any of you readers that Coke means any type of soda they carry, y'all ain't from around here.)

LISA DENTON: You know I never turn down a free meal, even if it's just a hot dog. That they'll throw in popcorn and a Co-Cola is just icing on the cake. Mmmm, cake.

As I understand it, the Mocs are leading the Southern Conference North Division -- go Mocs! -- so this is a way to encourage a big crowd as the team goes for a SoCon North Division title. The game starts at 7, and tickets can be had for as little as $4 (use the "tradition" promo code at

With all the free food, it's good that the T-shirts are black. I can eat all I want and still look slim in black.

BARRY: It's a big game for the Mocs. They have two home games remaining, and the folks over in the athletics department are hoping a large crowd will help them get a win. The last home game is Wednesday, and if tonight's game goes well, there might be more free stuff on Wednesday.

LISA: Speaking of madness, we should mention that Tim Conway will be at the Tivoli at 7 p.m. Tuesday. They say there's a fine line between madness and genius, and your phone interview with him would be proof of that.

BARRY: He's not quite in a league with Jonathan Winters or Robin Williams, but there is no off switch on his brain. He says on his website that he's never had a serious thought in his life. I got to see this a few years ago. The late Harvey Korman was with him, and it was hilarious and a lot of fun. Chuck McCann fills in now as his foil, and Louise DuArt does the Carol Burnett bits such as Mrs. Wiggins.
