Bryan edges Madonna in invitational tourney

The Bryan College baseball team improved to 7-3 for the season by edging Madonna in a Tennessee Valley Invitational game Saturday afternoon on the Dayton school's campus. The Lions played a late game in the tournament, as did Tennessee Temple at Red Bank High School.

* Lee 11-10, Illinois Tech 0-5: At Cleveland, the Flames completed a four-game sweep with Saturday's wins, featuring a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts for Jay Bolen (3-0) in the first game. Logan Bowers was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two stolen basen and two runs scored in that game, while Travis Anderson was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs and Chris Grayson was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Seth Walker also scored twice and stole three bases, and Max Harvell was 2-for-2.

Michael Brown was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs in the first win and 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs in game two, when Lee (10-3) led 10-1 after three innings. Justin Marrero was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Walker also had two hits and two RBIs, Preston Scoggins added two RBIs and Angelo Lombardo was 3-for-4.

* Tennessee Wesleyan 5-1, Indiana Tech 1-3: At Athens, David Bergin and Corey Collins combined on a nine-inning four-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game for the host Bulldogs (8-3), when Cody Gaskill was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBIs and Stephen Branca was 2-for-4 with two runs and the other RBI. But the visitors outhit TWC 11-5 in the second game, led by Gary King going 3-for-4 with a double and all three RBIs. Anthony Boix was 2-for-3 for TWC and scored on David Lindsay's pinch-hit double.

* Covenant 13-12, Emory & Henry 3-0: On Lookout Mountain, the Scots improved to 4-0 with dominant pitching and offense. Tyler Smith got the first-game win with six strikeouts and three unearned runs in four innings, setting up a hitless, seven-strikeout three-inning save for Demarius Johnson, and Andre Glover got the second-game win with four innings of two-hit pitching.

Luke Furuto was 5-for-5 for the day with two doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored, while Kurtis Wiles was 4-for-5 with a homer, two triples, three RBIs and four runs and James Rollins was 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs. Harrison Fisher was 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs and an RBI in the first game, when Jared Carlson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Sterling Witt was 2-for-3 with a homer in game two.

* LaGrange 10-11, Sewanee 6-1: At LaGrange, Ga., the Tigers lost their season-opening doubleheader while the Panthers improved to 4-1.

n Cleveland State 10-3, Vincennes 6-4: At Cleveland, the Cougars (3-5) were led by Trevor Burgess, who was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI in the first game and had a two-run double in the second. Tanner Thompson got the pitching win in relief in game one, and Brandon Rader was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
