TWC women stretch streak to 19

Heather Gibson scored 23 points and Amy Jo Castor added 18 with four assists as top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan disposed of visiting Bryan, 64-53, in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament Tuesday.

It was the 19th consecutive win for Wesleyan (27-3), which is ranked 15th in NAIA Division II and will host the AAC women's semifinals Friday. Leah Frazier was credited with seven assists for the Lady Bulldogs.

Anna Thomas had 17 points and nine rebounds and Jessica Southern grabbed 13 rebounds for Bryan (10-20).

* Cleveland State 64, Walters State 54: At Morristown, Keith Johnson scored 19 points as the Cougars ended their regular season with a TCCAA win. Phillip Jenkins added 11 points for Cleveland State (12-14, 5-13).

* Walters (w) 55, Cleveland State 52: Stephanie Anderson led the Lady Cougars (20-5, 13-5) in defeat with four 3-pointers and 14 points, while Takeya Day had 12 points and four steals and Michelle Davis scored 10 points. Walters, the three-time defending region champion, scored 18 of the first 20 points in the second half and led by 15 before the Lady Cougars got within 53-52 on a Davis 3 with 34 seconds left. They had two 3-point chances bounce off the rim in the final 13 seconds.

* Berry 61, Covenant 56: At Mount Berry, Ga., the visitors' Callum Sears scored 27 points, but the Scots dropped to 5-20. Tim Miles scored 19 to lead the Vikings (15-10).

* Berry (w) 73, Covenant 50: Holly Compton had 19 points, seven assists and four steals as the Lady Vikings improved to 13-11. Kiaira Cooper and Jessie Blankenship scored 13 and 12 points and Hannah Craft had eight rebounds for Covenant (5-19).
