A store clerk was stabbed in the face this afternoon during a robbery at a downtown Chattanooga business, Chattanooga police said.

The clerk, whose name was not released, was taken to Erlanger hospital just after 2 p.m. when she walked from the Downtown Mart at 706 Market St. to get help.

Witnesses told officers at the scene that the robber, described as a short, heavy-set woman about 40 years old with her hair pulled back, got into a charcoal-colored Chrysler 300 sedan.

Police said a bloody steak knife was found inside the store and the cash register drawer was taken.
