Haslam named chairman of UT system board

Gov. Bill Haslam was named today to serve as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee system.

"I look forward to being as much as possible active," he told the board, which is meeting at UTC. "I tip my hat to the UT System. They've made incredible adjustments in a very difficult time."

Haslam told reporters that he doesn't see higher education going through significant additional budget cuts.

"It going to be a very difficult budget, but not completely bloody, if you will," he said.

He also discussed his idea to offer the HOPE scholarship for summer classes. Currently, HOPE is only available for classes in fall and spring semesters.
