Suspicious package gone, Birmingham airport reopens

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Police say the terminal at Birmingham's airport has reopened after being shut down for several hours as a bomb squad removed a suspicious package.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams tells The Birmingham News that the device was in a car parked in front of the terminal on the upper level of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The terminal was evacuated Sunday afternoon.

He says the bomb squad removed the package at about 7:30 p.m., more than 2 1/2 hours after it was found. They are examining it to see if it is explosive.

No one has been arrested and no one was injured.
