Go north for white stuff

The Hamilton County area may see some snowfall but little accumulation today. However, areas north and east of the county could receive as much as 5 inches.

National Weather Service officials said most of Middle and East Tennessee will be under a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Weather Service spokesman Derek Eisentrout said Hamilton along with Bradley, Sequatchie and Marion counties are not in the advisory area.

The rest of East Tennessee could get from 2 to 5 inches of snow, he said.

"We're showing Chattanooga should get an inch or less," Eisentrout said. "However, the temperature will be in the low 40s so it's going to fall and melt."

He said southern portions of the advisory area, such as McMinn, Meigs and Rhea counties, could see from 2 to 3 inches of accumulation with upward of 5 inches farther north.

WRCB Channel 3 Meteorologist Nick Austin said for the valley, region temperatures will prevent any significant accumulations. However, mountain areas could see up to 6 inches by midday Saturday.

However, he said while he isn't worried about snow, ice is a concern leading into Saturday morning.

National Weather Service forecasters in Peachtree City, Ga., said most of North Georgia will see light snow today with accumulations of less than a half inch for most of the area.

"The roads could get slushy Friday as the snow melts, but as temperatures drop below freezing we could have some ice," he said.

As this weather front moves out of the area Saturday, forecasters are watching another weather pattern that could produce significant accumulations of snow Sunday and Monday.

Weather service spokesmen in both areas said higher elevations could receive larger accumulations in the second storm.

Austin said the weather front coming in early next week could produce accumulations in the valley areas as well as the higher elevations.
