Junior League announces new members in provisional class

The Junior League of Chattanooga has welcomed 31 members into its spring provisional class.

The Junior League is recruiting women who have an interest in volunteerism to join its fall provisional class. An application packet will soon be available for download on the JLC website: www.jlchatt.org, then click "Join."

Ball earns doctorate

Nicholas Dewayne Ball recently completed requirements for his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He is the son of James A. Ball Jr. and Dorothea G. Ball.

He is a graduate of Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences and received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Dr. Ball has accepted a post-doctorate position at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Forbes receives arts fellowship

Kitty Forbes of Lookout Mountain, Ga., has been awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, which is located near Sweet Briar College in Virginia.

Forbes will be among 25 Fellows focusing on their creative projects at this working retreat for visual artists, writers and composers. Each artist is provided a private bedroom, a private studio and three meals a day.

Serving more than 350 artists a year, and more than 4,000 since its inception, VCCA is one of the nation's largest year-round artist communities.

DAR presents Americanism Medal to Shah

Harshad Shah, owner and chief executive officer of Hamilton Plastics, was named the recipient of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution's Americanism Medal recently. He was presented the medal by members of the Chickamauga chapter of DAR at their January luncheon meeting.

The Americanism Medal is given annually to only 12 naturalized citizens nationwide who have made significant contributions in their community. Recipients are nominated by local DAR chapters and also approved by the state and national organizations.

Shah immigrated to the United States in 1974 armed with $8 and a chemistry degree. He furthered his education in Chicago and worked for Owens Corning and Union Carbide, before moving to Chattanooga to manage the research and development department of a plastics firm in Dalton, Ga.

In 1986, Shah formed Hamilton Plastics to manufacture products for specialty markets. Today the company has a 300,000-square-foot plant on Amnicola Highway.

Shah became involved in the construction and management of franchise hotels including Marriot, Intercontinental Hotels, Days Inn and Comfort Inn. In 2006, he partnered with five businesspeople to organize CapitalMark Bank.

Mr. Shah has served on boards of AmSouth Bank, CapitalMark Bank, Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, Allied Arts, Baylor School, Community Foundation, YMCA Youth Foundation, Chattanooga State and GSET.

Parkridge staff earns award

Parkridge Medical Center's environmental services staff was recently recognized with Hospital Housekeeping System's 2010 Eastern Division Triple Diamond Award for excellent service and exceeding corporate expectations.

The Triple Diamond Award is the highest honor given to HHS-managed facilities, and only three of the awards are given each year.

Hiles named Eagle representative

Shavanti Hiles has been chosen to represent Georgia Northwestern Technical College at the Exceptional Adult Georgians in Literacy Education Leadership Institute in Atlanta on Feb. 9-11.

Delegates from every adult education program in Georgia, along with their nominating instructors and program administrators, will participate in the annual leadership training.

Hiles was nominated by Diane Elrod, lead instructor for adult education.

Cogar earns state law honor

Arkansas-LSU Live Blog

Nancy Cogar has been named to the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division's Diversity Leadership Institute.

Cogar is one of 15 law students in the state selected to participate in the program. She is a second-year law student at Nashville School of Law.

She leads outreach and communication at Choose Chattanooga, the area's new relocation initiative.

Mitchell inducted into honor society

Jason L Mitchell has been inducted into the Alpha Beta Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Chattanooga State Community College.

Phi Theta Kappa is an academic honor society for two-year colleges.

The criminal justice major is the son of Christine Newberry and Donald Mitchell.
