A 49-year-old man charged in the June death of a woman in Emma Wheeler housing has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and will face the grand jury for a possible indictment.

Michael Crumpton, 49, faces a criminal homicide charge in the beating and strangulation death of Victoria Godwin, 42.

Witnesses told police that they saw Crumpton enter Godwin's home on June 7 and a short while later heard what sounded like an argument, a woman screaming, telling Crumpton to stop, then silence.

Others saw Crumpton flee the Emma Wheeler home shortly after the incident.

A medical examiner's report showed a grapefruit-sized bruise on Godwin's head.

Crumpton has previously served 17 years in federal prison for weapons-related charges, according to Times Free Press archives.
