Woman charged in carrier killing
A 33-year-old woman has been charged with murder in the weekend shooting of a newspaper carrier outside The Gadsden Times building.
Gadsden police Sgt. Tom Bradley said Ethel Lee Brewster of East Gadsden was being held on a $100,000 cash bond in the shooting of Edward Robert Jackson Jr.
Police said the 44-year-old Jackson was shot several times while on the loading dock, waiting to begin his newspaper route.
Witnesses told police that Brewster pulled up to the loading dock and got out. They said she and Jackson quarreled before she pulled out a gun.
GORDON COUNTY, Ga.
Authorities probe 5-year-old's death
Gordon County authorities are investigating the death of a 5-year-old child who drowned at a neighbor's swimming pool Wednesday morning.
Witnesses said the child was found in a pool at a house on Woody Road in the southwestern part of the county around 8:45 a.m., according to a Gordon County Sheriff's Office news release.
The child was nonresponsive when pulled from the waters, the release states.
An autopsy will be conducted.

Family treated in rabies exposure
The North Georgia Health District says six children and five adults are undergoing rabies treatments after being exposed to an unvaccinated rabid dog in Cherokee County.
Cherokee County Environmental Health Manager Curtis Barnhart said all 11 people recently came into contact with a family dog. The dog died June 24 and tested positive for rabies.
Barnhart said the group then began treatment, which includes one shot of rabies immune globulin and four shots of rabies vaccine over a two-week period.
Barnhart said the people at risk were the five family members living in the home and visitors from Cherokee, Pickens and Houston counties.

Disaster help deadline noted
U.S. Small Business Administration officials want to remind businesses and nonprofit organizations affected by the April storms to complete and return their disaster loan applications as soon as possible.
Officials said many Tennessee businesses were physically or economically injured, but few have applied for federal disaster assistance. SBA offers up to $2 million to businesses with interest rates as low as 4 percent. Completing an application is essential to determining what assistance is available.
The deadline to apply for physical damage is Aug. 9. The deadline for working capital assistance is Feb. 9, 2012. There also is an extended deadline for homeowners and renters to seek help, officials said.
