Gihon Hardaway

A man booked in the Hamilton County Jail last Thursday died in the facility only a few days later, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Medical staff treated Gihon Hardaway, 37, as he was having a "medical emergency" early Saturday morning, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson.

He was later taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Atkinson said.

She did not specify what day and time Hardaway died.

Hardaway was booked in the jail on an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance, along with charges of resisting arrest, driving on a revoked license and improper registration.

Atkinson said sheriff's office investigators and the internal affairs division are conducting an investigation into Hardaway's death.

The body has been transferred to the Hamilton County medical examiner's office to determine a cause of death, she said.

Hardaway had done time in jail before. In 1997, he was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report it, records show, and six years later, he was arrested for assault and possession of a controlled substance.
