An illegal alien for president?

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., made a strange prediction during a recent Senate hearing at which dozens of illegal aliens were openly encouraged to "stand and be recognized" for their "sacrifice" in attending the hearing.

"When I look around this room, I see America's future," Durbin declared to the unlawful immigrants. "Our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our engineers, our scientists, our soldiers, our congressman, our senators and maybe our president."

What he apparently forgot -- or ignored -- is the fact that the U.S. Constitution forbids even lawful immigrants to become president, and so it certainly denies the White House to those who have come to the United States illegally.

That disrespect for the Constitution is deeply troubling, especially coming from a member of Congress who is sworn to "support and defend" the Constitution. If Durbin wishes to see the Constitution changed, there is an amendment process through which he can try to bring that change about. Otherwise, he should not be dismissing portions of the Constitution that he does not like.

What's more, it is appalling that lawbreakers should enjoy Senate "recognition" for their open defiance of U.S. immigration law -- almost as if they had performed some act of heroism.

The fact that they were freely able to identify themselves in a public forum without any apparent fear of arrest and deportation shows how abysmally the federal government is performing its job of upholding immigration laws.

It is disturbing that the federal government will not firmly enforce the law, and that some of our lawmakers are encouraging illegal behavior.

Senator Durbin chose to see hope, where this editor finds dispair. It's the positive attitudes that can change the world for the better.

There is no hope based on continuous daily criminal activity. Unless you propose opening your borders to anyone and everyone, nucanuck. Maybe they will change your country for the better, huh?

it's a disgrace, and treasoness, in my promote lawlessness by openly praising foreign invaders and siding with illegal aliens over u.s. citizens. the democrat party has devalued citizenship and actually put citizens in danger so they can gain from it politically.

nucanuck........that's's all politcal. it couldn't be more transparent.

what a load.

the democrat party, and actually many in the republican party, are spitting in the face of tax paying, law abiding citizens by pandering/kissing up to illegal aliens so they can slap their brand on the new, largest minority.

that's not's a fact.

illegal aliens should be tossed out on their asses....this isn't an issue in other countries. only here.

illegal aliens are not citizens. they should never be accorded the same rights citzens have under our constitution. they're inferior to citizens because they're foreign invaders. citizens should always be favored over them. it doesn't matter what race or ethnicity the foreign invaders are ...they're all lawbreakers.

they're human beings like we are, obviously, and deserve empathy, but not at the cost of lawlessness. it 's not racism, it's not discrimination, it's not being mean or cold.....they simply have to respect our laws.

democrats for sure, and many republicans, have fallen into the sophistry trap on this issue... it has to stop.

Positive attitudes + welcomed law-breaking non-citizens = more and more chaos and increased debt to tax-payers for persons who are not our responsibility.

Illegal immigrants are not here because the average U.S. citizen is compassionate and wants to help those less fortunate who live south of the border. Illegal immigrants are here because those individuals who get rich off big business can get even richer by employing people who will work more cheaply than American citizens will. It's the same reason that businesses keep moving away from the U.S. and into countries where they can hire workers who will demand less money and less health and safety regulations. These same wealthy people are the ones who make large contributions to politicians. Rest assured that many political figures from both major parties are beholden to those who want to maintain the status quo where illegal immingration is concerned.
