Dirt track cyclists have the chance to fight blood-related cancers tonight by riding in the 31st annual Bicycle Motocross Race for Life at the Bradley County Recreational Park.

The BMX event is part of an American Bicycle Association effort that began in 1981 to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at BMX tracks across the nation.

Race for Life is a great way to help make changes in the lives of people who are affected by the disease while also enjoying a family sport, said Tammy Finnell, operator of Bradley BMX.

"BMX is some of the most fun you can have in the dirt," she said.

The bike-racing event offers plenty of incentives to dirt track regulars and to those who are curious about the sport, said Todd Finnell, who operates the Bradley BMX track with his wife.

Licensed ABA riders earn double points at the race, making it one of a handful of local BMX events to give cyclists a chance at big bumps in cumulative season scores, according to event organizers.

This BMX event does not require an annual ABA license to participate, making it the perfect introduction to competitive dirt track cycling, according to Mr. Finnell.

Riders are required to have their helmet (full-face helmet recommended), wear a long-sleeve shirt, long pants and enclosed shoes.
