Mayo is charged in theft at home

A former University of Tennessee football player has been charged with stealing a refrigerator from a tornado-damaged home on Willbrook Circle in Bradley County.

Cameron Andrew Mayo, 25, of Michigan Avenue Road, posted bond and was released on a charge of theft under $500, Bradley County Sheriff's Office spokesman Bob Gault said in a news release.

Gault said a neighbor stopped deputies on patrol and reported he had seen someone taking the refrigerator earlier in the day. He described the suspect's truck, and deputies saw it pull up to the same house, Gault said.

When questioned, Mayo told deputies he had sold the refrigerator to a scrap-metals dealer, Gault said.

In 2009, the former UT offensive lineman was arrested on charges of sexual assault while working as a substitute teacher at Dalton High School, according to Chattanooga Times Free Press archives.

Mayo was a student at Dalton High School when he committed to UT in 2004, but knee injuries cut short his gridiron career, according to newspaper archives.

Officer charged with DUI, resigns

A 40-year-old police officer arrested on a DUI charge has resigned from the Dothan Police Department.

Brent Parrish was arrested on Saturday by Alabama state troopers and charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. He resigned on Tuesday.

State troopers' spokesman Kevin Cook said Parrish was involved in a wreck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 52 and County Road 55 between Webb and Columbia. Cook said Parrish later was stopped by a Houston County sheriff's deputy.

Cook said the other party in the accident was not injured.

Parrish had been a Dothan police officer for 15 years.

Sunday alcohol sales vote delayed

Voters in Athens won't have a chance to vote on Sunday sales of alcohol in stores until the presidential primaries next year.

Commissioners considered placing Sunday sales on the ballot in November but decided not to because of a vote at that time on continuing a 1 percent sales tax for local schools.

Commissioners say they are concerned that Sunday sales could draw opponents to the polls who also would vote against the education local option sales tax.

The Legislature passed a bill earlier this year allowing cities and counties to put Sunday retail beer, wine and liquor sales before voters.

CLEVELAND, Tenn.

Fire department given equipment

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation on Thursday donated $17,000 in confined-space rescue equipment to the Cleveland Fire Department, according to a news release.

Since 2005, the nonprofit foundation has donated more than $95,000 to Tennessee public safety agencies to provide funding, equipment and educational opportunities to help first responders.
