Lift a mug at Downtown Dalton Beer Tasting Festival

Friday, June 10, 2011

The Downtown Dalton Development Authority is hoping people will want to raise a mug with their friends to support public art projects in the North Georgia city.

The third annual Downtown Dalton Beer Tasting Festival, featuring from 30 to 50 varieties of beer, will be Saturday afternoon on the Dalton Green next to the Whitfield County Courthouse.

"It's been very successful," said Downtown Dalton Development Authority director Veronica French. "It's something people look forward to every year."

The tasting festival is sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Co., which will supply beer through Eagle Rock Distributing Co. of Stone Mountain, Ga. Varieties run the spectrum from mainstream to imported to craft beers.

Among the brands expected to be available are Yuengling, Fat Tire, Tiger, Magic Hat, Peak Organic and Budweiser.

Proceeds from this year's event will help fund public art projects the Downtown Dalton Development Authority is working on.

The festival also will offer food such as bratwurst, barbecued chicken and hot dogs from local restaurants.

"It's mainly things you can eat with your hands while you're holding a beer," said French.

Entertainment will be provided by Red Eyed Gravy, a Dalton-based Southern rock band.

All ages may attend the festival, but only patrons 21 or older may taste the various beers. Wristbands will be used for participation, and a valid ID will be required at the gate.

Free rides home for those who have a bit too many tastes will be available from Safe Ride America.

French said the first two years of the festival attracted 200 to 300 guests, and this year's should be even larger if Facebook responses are any indication.

"It's growing," she said.

Tickets are available at the Downtown Dalton Development Authority office, the Dalton Depot Restaurant and Trackside Tavern, the Dalton Freight Depot Visitors Center and online at www.downtowndalton.com.
