Player of the Year
Bobby Brouner
Slow and steady wins the race; the same could be said for calm and collected. The even-keeled McCallie junior finished the 2011 season with a 13-5 record overall, which included wins over players from Baylor, Montgomery Bell Academy and Memphis University School. He took fourth in the Division II-AA East/Middle Region tournament and second at No. 1 singles at the prestigious Rotary Invitational, and he capped off his season with a runner-up finish in the Division II-AA state individual tournament.
"Bobby had a great year playing No. 1 for us," McCallie coach Eric Voges said. "With the schools we play, that's difficult, but he's a level-headed kid that makes his opponent hit a lot of balls back and makes it difficult. He's not very big but sometimes uses that scrappiness to his advantage."
Coach of the year
Jerry Pate
When his Patriots defeated Notre Dame 4-2, Pate got the opportunity he'd been waiting 22 seasons for - the chance to take an Arts & Sciences tennis team to the Class A/AA state tournament. The Patriots eventually lost to eventual champ Christian Academy of Knoxville, but they finished with an overall 11-2 record, the District 6-A/AA and Region 3-A/AA titles and state singles finalist Jackson Lenoir.
"I just have to give credit to the guys," Pate said. "They set goals and arrived at them. We had a great season, and since we only lose one senior, we hope to be good again next year and make it at least as far as we did this year."
