Player of the Year

photo Samantha Caswell

Samantha Caswell

Caswell's individual finish to the 2011 season might not have been to her liking, but the Baylor freshman was an integral part of the Division II-AA team state championship, playing No. 1 singles for the Lady Red Raiders. She was the most valuable player of the Decoturf National Champions and won the East/Middle Region tournament, and she reached the individual state tournament semifinals and had an overall record of 15-5.

"Samantha's an amazingly talented player that worked very hard this year," Baylor coach Dustin Kane said. "I'm proud of how much work she put into this team, and it paid off for her and she's very deserving."

This could have been considered a dream season for the second-year Baylor coach, as Kane's Lady Red Raiders completed a 13-0 overall record by winning the Division II-AA state championship. The team also won the East/Middle Region individual tournament and the Decoturf National Championships in Louisville, Ky., early in the season.

"I was just fortunate to have an amazing team this year," Kane said. "It's easy to coach a team that's not only good but works hard. They made me look good this year. The way they played all season long, they deserve all of the credit."
